OK! To start with I’ve never been a big fan of Telecom. Especially when it comes to the money they charge you for our low grade Broadband. However today I have come across some fantastic news. Being a student who watches their fair amount of TV I decided to get UHF sky installed for $33.96 per month.

A few weeks down the track my flatmates and I decided to look into Sky digital, as the channel selection of UHF is pretty minimal. Sky TV are currently offering a $99 connection fee and charge you $47.73 per month for the basic channel package. They also charge you a $250 early disconnection fee if your flat breaks up before the year is out which happens more often than not in most cases.

Telecom in comparison are offering the same service at a $99 connection fee, charging you $38.00 per month ($4.00 more than UHF) with no early disconnection fee whatsoever. This is awesome news for all the students out there.

The one question that struck me is why isn’t this deal promoted? You would think Telecom would get a lot more money from our market segment advertising this than with little fluffy puppets?

If you look at the Telecom site it says

SKY Digital installation is $99. A 12 month minimum term applies. A $50 fee is payable for early disconnection.

Still a good deal but not free.

It does surprise me that Telecom stopped promoting their Sky package deals, anybody know the full story behind this?

Apparently not I joined up today!? I think they might of just changed the name of the plan to extra value Sky start up. I also rang up about that $50 disconnection fee and apparently their website’s out of date (no surprises there) and the early disconnection fee has been dropped.

This is not part of TVLine, but any Sky subscriber, can be billed by Telecom for the Sky Basic package at the reduced rate, so long as the account names are the same (i.e. Sky / Telecom). This gives the consumer the freedom to sign up with Sky and take advantage of offers such as 3months free then migrate the billing to your Telecom account.

All other add on(s) (for a lack of a better term), such a sports and movie channels will continue to be billed by Sky.

My understanding of why Telecom made the deal with Sky was to come back at Telstraclear/Saturn's offer of having Phone, TV and Internet all bundled together under the one bill, hence when you check a wellington phone number the deal looks a little bit cheaper still (it was when I last looked but its been a while)

The UHF channels are charged to your Telecom Account but digital is on a seperate bill.
This is how its working for me, how about you?

Anyway, you pay $6 or something less to have the UHF charged to your phone bill but then you have to travel to Tory Street Wellington (The only SKY office in the whole of Wellington) to pay the remainder of the bill if you dont set up direct debit.

Its all a little confusing at 1st for alot of people.

I was made aware that this is the same if you sign up through Telecom or Sky.

We only have the Sky Digital service and it is all charged to our phone bill as part of the "Sky Basic" package. We save around $6 per month in doing it this way, so why not?

Sky bill us directly for the Sky Watch magazine as well as any PPV Movies watched.

I think there may be different terms for different areas. Especially in areas that are offered more than one service provider.
