Since a week or 2 I keep getting disconnected from 3G randomly. I have a Nexus 4, the H or 3G icon is gone on top, in the settings drawer the network icon is orange (instead of white). Turning airplane mode on an off solves this problem for a while in 9/10 cases. In 1/10 cases I just have to wait, or ask Telecom to reset my connection.
It happens at least in Wellington CBD, as I am there the most of the day for work. It happens too underway. It's quite random, but pretty annoying.

I have a custom ROM (Omnirom), switched to CM (after complete, fresh install) but same problem occurs. So, I don't think is because of the custom ROM.

I asked Telecom (via Twitter), but only thing they do is reset my number, not investigating why it happens. As it is a hard problem, not sure whether they can fix it.

Anyone who knows what might be the problem? Perhaps flash an older radio version of my phone?

Are you sure you are still running an 850mhz radio... I've known a few folks flash their phone to end up running only at 2100mhz which gives them a horrific experience.

Euuh not sure, I flashed this ROM. How can I check which frequency I'm on?
AFAIK, 850MHZ only has coverage in CBD. I also have coverage in rural areas, where only 2100 MHZ is available. So I think I've 2100 MHZ as well?

Totally incorrect.

The Telecom network is 100% 850Mhz. 2100Mhz is used as infill and for capacity in most major cities and only offers limited coverage within those areas.

If you've flashed your handset with non approved firmware and/or radio then no network is going to provide you with support. There are many unique settings that are customised in the software specific to each network, which is why for the best performance you should only ever use a handset on a network with the approved firmware.

It's the other way around. 850 is nationwide and 2100 is infill in the cbd.

Always wonder why people with these sort of fones flash them. I can understand it with a Samsung or HTC but the Nexus is about as vanilla as you get..

Always wonder why people want to start an off-topic discussion here which doesn't answer the question of the TS at all....
Stock is okay, but wanted to try something different. CM11 offers e.g. close all apps, Halo, Active Display, customize settings drawer, etc. etc. And, it's possible to overclock.

Alright, will revert to stock.

It might just be a co-incidence, but I've had the same problem start happening on my S3 running CM in the last couple of weeks (Telecom in Wellington CBD). I haven't had any OS updates recently so I just figured my S3 was dying.

Can you let me know if reverting to stock fixes it?

The problem is you may have buggered your radio.. there are inspection tools to let you check your radio is set right. Google is your friend

Just as one example of compatibility I had terrible problems every time I'd travel overseas getting my 2d S3 to reconnect back to Vodafone once I landed back in NZ. The phone would always end up camping onto Telecom in SOS mode and would refuse to reconnect to Vodafone, and would typically take at least half a dozen attempts at power cycling the device and waiting before it would finally connect to Vodafone. Switch to the Vodafone firmware and the problem instantly goes away.

There is a similar thread to this running already, I have been having increasing occurrences of a very similar issue. Like the OP I am randomly losing data connection, I am confident (at least in my case) that it is not a radio issue as the problem would be all or nothing, at work i get a consistent and strong 4G signal and have had no issue up until the last couple of weeks now all of a sudden it is happening 2 or 3 & more times a day

One thing i find weird is when i lose data i can still make calls and receive texts so i am obviously still connected to the network just no data?

Will definitely let you know. Just flashed stock 4.4.2 and re-installing all apps now...

@Wade: Yeah, same for me, txting and calling works fine. Do you have a custom ROM?

I changed to stock ROM 4.4.2 and today I haven't been disconnected yet...
Strange thing though is that I don't see H+ anymore, only H. Not sure whether the stock ROM ever showed H+ or if it's only visible on custom ROM's.
But, most important thing is that it seems that the problem has been solved!

therein lies your answer, maybe they don't want vanilla just the phone as stock gives you very little options. I don't buy a phone for its firmware but maybe some do
