Telecom today announced it would give its Xtra customers one week's free internet as an apology for the email problems experienced over the past week - at a cost of $6 million to the company.

Chief operating officer Kevin Kenrick said the gesture is an acknowledgment of the inconvenience and frustration that many email customers faced as Telecom upgraded its service last week.

"Over the past week, we feel like we have let down our online community and the charitable donation is a way for us to give something back to the wider community."

All Xtra customers will be able to go to a webpage from next week and vote for their preferred NZ charity, and Telecom will then donate $250,000 to each of the four charities with the most votes.

Telecom will provide all its Xtra customers with one week's free broadband or dialup access in recognition of email problems faced by many of them over the last week.

The cost to Telecom of the week's free internet will be approximately $5-6 million (including GST).

Telecom said customers do not need to do anything to receive the week's free access credit, as it will be automatically applied to each customer's Telecom bill from October.

Mr Kenrick said Telecom is still helping some customers who are experiencing email difficulties and will continue addressing their particular issues on a case by case basis.

"We are genuinely sorry for the technology problems that affected many of our customers over this time. We are aware of how important reliable email access is, and apologise to each customer whose service was affected."

"The launch of Yahoo!Xtra Bubble has been a miserable start to an initiative designed to bring the world's best online services to our New Zealand customers. We thank our customers for their patience during this time and encourage them to give Yahoo!Xtra Bubble a go as we think they will find it worth it," said Mr Kenrick.

What do you all think about this move?

I think Telecom have done the right thing - Well done!

And a lot better than last time they 'gave' a credit of a few dollars, but made people jump through hoops by making them fill in all their billing and address details on a online form.

I spend 3 hours on hold last night (27/8) trying to log a DSL fault before someone picked up, so it looks like they still do have a backlog of e-mail related problems.

Well done Telecom for doing good by your customers.

Vodafone apologises to Telecom customers as well

Vodafone today announced it would also like to give something to Telecom Xtra customers following their email problems experienced last week.

Vodafone will give customers a one year free broadband plan if they bring their landline and toll calling to Vodafone.

General manager of Products and Services Kursten Shalfoon acknowledged that the gesture is a cheeky one, but he also would like to apologise to Xtra customers for all the inconvenience and frustration they’ve felt over the past week.

“We recognise Telecom’s generous offer of one week’s free broadband for all Xtra customers but we’d like to go a bit further. We’ll give customers a year’s broadband for free instead.”

Shalfoon says he personally knows several people who were affected.

“I think it’s awful and I really feel for them. If they want to give us a call on 0800 42 41 40 we’ll happily ring Telecom on their behalf and change them over to Vodafone. I’ll  probably do it myself.”

Shalfoon says the offer is available to anyone affected by Xtra’s outage.

“Heck, we’ll make it available to everyone who knows someone on Xtra and even those who are thinking about joining this whole broadband revolution. Come on over.”

Customers who move their landline to Vodafone get to keep their existing phone number so there’s no need to change. Those that take up the $20 a month tolls package can make an unlimited number of calls to landline customers in New Zealand and talk for up to two hours per call. They’ll also get Vodafone’s Broadband1 package absolutely free.

Broadband1 offers broadband download speeds as fast as the customer’s line can handle and 1GB of traffic, which is enough to send up to 200,000 angry text emails. Customers who want more traffic can sign up for the higher-level plans and get the $30 a month discount taken off the price. Broadband2, for example, offers 5GB of traffic and would cost only $10 a month.

Customers will need their own DSL modem and early termination charges may apply.Innocent

Yeah Right! Like I'd want to sign up with any telco for 12 months..

Whilst the rest of my friends and families are enjoying falling data and calling prices I'd be locked into a pretty stinky contract where I'm forced to pay $20 for a basic broadband that'll retail for a helluva lot less in a matter of months... Nah you can keep your "freebie" its actually a rip

How do your ihug customers feel about having to cough up $99 for the same "freebie" package??

Yeah, don't think you've quite grasped the bundle we're offering.

1: Landline from Vodafone
2: Tolls package for $20/month
3: Broadband1 for free.

Sure, Broadband1 is only a 1GB plan so if you want something higher (as I imagine most of the GZ readers will) then you can take the discount up the foodchain with you. I'm on Broadband2 and the discount means I now get 5GB of data for $10/month. That's good value for money.

As for a 12 month contract, 12 months from now we'll have unbundling in place and then all bets are off. The landscape will have changed entirely by then.

Cheers

Paul

You know I dont think ihug customers will quite see the bundle the way you describe and somehow, nor will most GZ users who use Skype and therefore dont really need a tolls package in the first place... Come to think about it, what compensation did VF give all the customers it mucked about for WEEKS with the billing bloopers???

Mr Pilcher! If anyone didn't know better they'd think you work for Telecom... Tongue out

Don't you owe me a beer?

Not only do the customers see it that way, it IS that way... pay for fixed line, add in the tolls package and get Broadband1 for free. Simple really, and I'm happy to report the customers are buying it in droves.

And while plenty of people are happy to use VoIP for all toll calling, there's still a chunk of customers who want to just pick up the phone and call and that's who we're catering to.

Also, nobody's saying you HAVE to sign up (although I know a couple of marketing people who think we should try that approach) - Orcon's got an offer in the market and I'm sure the others will do something one of these days...

It's a good time to be a broadband customer, don't you think? Finally. After all these years we've been talking about broadband.

Cheers

Paul

PS - I'm serious about that beer.

That's really nice of you guys. What about your own customers? I don't recall getting anything for the extended period of time we were unable to check our account balances during your billing system 'upgrade'.

I think it is a little hypocritical for Vodafone to be taking shots at Telecom for an outage during a system changeover given the length of its billing system
outage during the upgrade .

I dont think most pople in GZ are tolls users and I also dont think they appreaciate you using GZ as your personal advertorial outlet - in fact I think the GZ rules specifically forbid it... A beer sounds fine - your shout

Exactly I mean IHUG has been down so many times in the last year that allot of people have actually lost count.....

Well done though to XTRA I think its outstanding that the Charities will be able to benefit from the donation's.
Allot of charities find it extremely hard to come by anywhere near this sort of funding.
Well done as well with regards to the weeks refund of service.
