My parent's contacts are looking at going Naked UFB. Would a ASUS N56U router work and do we need to input any settings into it?

The reason I mentioned about the ASUS N56U is that they have used that in the past and it has worked well re: the WiFi strength compared to a old Vodafone Netcomm (ADSL) that I took in to test it around (in the past).

You will need to find out if the N56U can do VLAN tagging. If it can't you won't be able to use it.

I could be wrong but I had a feeling the N56 doesn't do VLAN tagging but the N66 does.

Fingers crossed I read on a previous post that it might be possible.

Re: the settings. I had a look at Big Pipe's website it makes no mention - are their any settings required?

So BigPipe use PPPoE, which means that in the username and password fields you just enter anything you like, they just can't be left blank. The only other setting to change is to add the VLAN tagging.

I've been using Asus routers for a while on Vodafone UFB and now on BigPipe so I can give you a hand setting it up if you like.

Hey so we are trying our UFB without VLAN tagging, so if you ask nicely to our support team we can provision your connection without VLAN tagging it to avoid the issue of having a router that does it.

I've got my UFB install coming up in a week or so. I might want to start a separate thread about it, but in the meantime...

My (ADSL) modem is a trusty Dynalink RTA1025W (running Netcomm firmware). Can I use it for UFB? It might not be optimal, but I didn't realise my install would get scheduled so quickly and now I just want something that will work to start with while I sort things out properly.

There's a page in the setup that looks like this:

I.e. mentions VLAN tagging, does that mean it's good to go?

Otherwise, how did things work out without tagging? Is that something I can ask for, what are the benefits/drawbacks?

P.S. FYI, the reason to start my own thread is I'm looking for ideas about how to set up my home network well. We are probably doing renovations later in the year so would be a good opportunity to sort everything out. At this stage I think I'm just going to get the ONT installed in the garage (rather than the study as originally planned) with the view to putting in a patch panel etc. Is it easy enough to get it slightly moved (i.e. up/down/along the wall, into the box) later, or should I really try and get that organised before the install? I didn't want to take this thread too OT...

I imagine you'll lose qos for voip if you get vlan tagging removed on your line?

No, you can't use an RTA1025W on UFB. It's only an ADSL modem. You'll need a router with an Ethernet WAN port such as a TP-Link Archer C9. Worst comes to worst, on Bigpipe you can connect a single computer straight to the ONT and set it to connect on PPPoE.

Moving an ONT is a pain. If you're going to be upgrading your internal wiring in the future, it'll be easier for you to get the ONT installed in its final location, and just run your own Ethernet cable between it and your router/patch panel/etc.

Edit: Ethernet WAN, not just ethernet.

Yup, missed that bit. OK, better go on a shopping spree this week. The C9 looks good, but it's twice as expensive as the C2. Is it worth the extra money?

Might look out for a distribution box too, so I can put the ONT in there ready for whatever changes I make in the future. Hassle.

Just the Starter 100/20 at the moment, but if I'm going to buy a router, I'd prefer to get something capable of the higher speeds probably. I am leaning towards the C2 because it's cheap, but if the C9 or NF8AC (recommended by Bigpipe) are that much better, I'd go with one of them.

The device terminating your connection will likely end up being the main bottleneck for speeds. Going for the cheapest device that'll work is IMO a bit short sighted, but each to their own.
The C9, NF8AC and C2 will all work on BP UFB. The C9 is the most capable of them all.
