Hi All,

Is there anyone out there using the 6275i for email who can clarify what 'client(s)' it has and how it works - the official specs do not refer to POP & SMTP capability (which they do for the roughly equivalent 6234 GSM equivalent), which implies you can not POP email down to the phone and must instead access via the WAP Browser like Web Mail? Telecom look like they restrict access to only the Xtra Mail Servers anyway, but can you POP them, or must you be online burning up data usage to see & send email?

Cheers & TIA.

no pop client preloaded, even if there was it would still incurs wap usage charges...

Hi Tony, thanks for that, and yes it would, BUT POPing data down to your phone for offline processing (i.e. reading & composing replies) typically uses far less WAP bandwidth than staying online the whole time and doing the reading and composing while connected...

So does Telecom just have you browse to the Xtra Webmail (or WAPmail?) site to do the Xtramail they advertise on their site for this handset?

Cheers.

Yes they do have you doing it over WAP.

You could download a pop mail reader I suppose. I had other applications working fine on a 6265 using WAP data connection.

Okay Thanks Tony. I'm looking at it from the data account perspective - our users only do mobile email sporadically so as a result we do the cheapest plan (no point paying $$ each month for unused bandwidth) - so when they do use it I want to keep the total data transfer as low as possible so they don't blow their monthly cap except in emergencies...

You may be able to get a java WAP application that handles POP or a Webmail mini interface similar to Gmail mobiles.

Data charges for WAP which includes java usage are fixed at $10 per Megabyte (1c per KB) and cannot be changed. Placing it onto a data plan will not work to reduce WAP charges.

Okay, thanks Para, I was worried that might be the case... I'm looking at moving our company mobiles over to the new TelstraClear service (using Telecom's backbone) from Vodafone and although they have some flexibility they will still be limited to some degree by their wholesale agreement with Telecom... So I'm assuming Data will be little different from current Telecom rates, which makes that issue very relevant...

Paradoxsm is 100% correct - any usage from the WAP browser AND from any internet application on the phone is NOT included in any data plan you have on the phone.

Hi Tony - is that right? That's bizarre, what's the point of the Data Plan then if you do something more than the $10/month one and have a data usage allowance included?

John

Data usage via WAP goes through different infrastructure to data usage over 'internet'.

It's the same on Vodafone - you can connect to their WAP gateway using the apn live.vodafone.com, then you're in one domain with one set of charging - or you can connect to the 'internet' domain at www.vodafone.net.nz, when you're into a different set of charging.

WAP from Telecom has not data 'buckets' as such. Internet usage does (based on the plan you buy).

Never the two shall meet....

Hence why if POP3 - or blackberry even - is the way you need to work, it's best to buy a gadget that can support it (like an Okta Agent, HTC Titan, Treo700w etc) rather than retrofitting POP3 via java on a device. You'll find java apps that support this tend to be VERY limited.

Thanks Antonio - I have been looking at the Okta Agent as the alternative - I only have 4 user (incl. Myself) who need mobile email and only 2 use regularly. One is our GM who will get the BB 8830 once it's out, one is already getting an Okta, and it's the 2 remainder (incl. Myself) who are the casual users who I am trying to find the best solution for... So I guess Okta Agent's for all 4 of us is going to be the best option (with one being replaced by the 8830 once available)?

It hasn't been problem on Vodafone as, as you mentioned, we just accessed via the appropriate Access Point, and primarily did POP and nothing else anyway...

If you just need to use it very occasionally, just use a WAP access or a java application.. usage over wap is pretty minimal.
You can MMS pictures out if you absolutely need to.

The standard DATA devices, Palm, HTC, Okta agent, and Cyberbank can all use data access points.

All regular phones have been setup with WAP access only, this also handles the JAVA network usage.

The price recently dropped from $50 per megabyte to $10 per megabyte so we can only be thankful (and enabled me a realization to dump Vodafone without having to resort to a CDMA "data device" just for some small time WAP access,)

I like the Okta agent, Plain but very functional. Need to do further testing before I do a full review which is deserves. It's a landmark product for CDMA..

Just a few points here regarding TelstraClear. First of all, this is a retail agreement, not a wholesale agreement, and as such Telstra can set their own pricing and offer their own services. Telecom's data pricing may not be Telstra chose to run with. Secondly, you may want to check with TelstraClear if they will allow a Telecom branded device (as compared to a TelstraClear device) to be connected via their service (or are you purchasing the device from Telstra when their service launches??).

Also very likely Telstra will not let Xtra customers check their emails form their wap service.

I'd be very keen to hear your thoughts overall on the Agent...

Thanks NZBNW, yes sorry, wholesale was my word/term - my account rep hadn't fully advised/explained the new agreement with me yet so was 'generalising' about what its final form is/will be.

Fairly certain they won't do that... It would be a philospohical about face after being on the receiving end for so long...
