I am 99% sure that about 10 years ago, I walked into the local telecom store and they had a CDMA flip phone for sale which was about the size of a matchbox.

Does anyone remember the make/model?

Nah I dont think thats it - pretty sure it was a sliver flip phone, very long and slim looking, where as the panasonic has a fat or wide appearance

There was a couple of samsung phones with the sweet blue back lit screen that I was selling way back in the day

The phone I assume you are thinking of is a Samsung. For the life of me, I can't remember the model number but it was red with a little rose on it. It was very expensive as it came with a second battery and a separate battery charger. It's bugging me now as to the model.

PS. They did have a smaller handset on TDMA (025). It was a Motorola flip phone (smaller than a Star Tac) which also cost a small fortune. Again time seems to have erased the model number from me :-(

EDIT: Me thinks it was the Samsung A400

On TDMA there was the Ericsson AF778 (I used to have one. Very nice phone in its day). It's all coming back to me now. lol

That's the one that springs to my mind. It has a multi colour notification LED too.

Samsung W531?? It was a small dual CDMA / GSM flip phone. Still got one in a drawer at home..

When they first rolled out the CDMA network they had small silver Samsung phones with a plastic flap over the keys. I had one given to me for a work phone. The SMS menu of the phone had no access to the phone book, so you had to remember people's phone number to text them. Also were machine washable, as my colleague found out. There was a silver oval bezel around the screen from memory. They had an elemantary WAP browser.

Was from a different seller, slightly cheaper. Also the only cellphone I've ever seen (not including removable batteries) with both hard and soft power switches.

I remember it. Very square, not outer screen I think.

I'm thinking samsung. There was the A420 which was around the same size, but later. The X609 was around the same generation, but bigger. Can't put my finger on the model. I worked in Telecom retail a couple of years after that, so still had the odd one floating around.

Edit:

There was also the nokia 2355, which was tiny - but the fact you compared it to a mtchbox makes me think you had somethign squarer in mind.
