Hi all
With BigPipe promising to be in Christchurch within the next X months, I was hoping to speed up the process by getting my consents underway now. Getting the shared driveway access consent to each of the owners of the neighbouring houses and then the owner of our rental.

The landlord has replied with "Can you please have the company send through a report showing the work involved for the fiber connection so the owner can see what is required."
I know Enable certainly wouldn't do this without an order underway already, but does anyone know if they would even do a site visit before they have signed consent from the neighbours/property owner?

Unlikely as they would not be billing anyone (your ISP) for their time. You could perhaps ask them if they could do a site scoping visit and bill you.

Chorus were initially (I understand) digging up and replacing concrete, but the expense of this was too great so they are stapling the cable along fencelines and where concrete has to be crossed they are cutting a groove only just big enough for the cable and putting a thin concrete layer over the top. Chorus do a site scoping visit a few days before the install date, and I would assume Enable do the same. Try and specify that they should arrange a time with you to meet and plan the install so you can have some input into how the cable is run. I can tell you exactly if you give me the layout of your house + garden, where your fibre ends outside your house and where your current copper jack (where street meets house) is.

Just had this entire process figured out and installed last week.

there are options here and there but the basics are

- get fibre from street to house - either overhead wire if existing, underground duct if existing, if not existing it will be stuck to the fence then trenched from fence to house. do you know where it ends outsideyour house?? this is MOST important as everything starts here.

- which comes up a pipe to a FTB box stuck to the side of the house

- in house - need to find a spot. preferably somewhere hidden and close to the side of the house where the fibre is coming from the street.
- the fibre then needs to find its wayfrom FTB to the ONT. the layout of the house will tell you that. holes will be drilled. you need to come up with a path that is close enough to the FTB and hidden enough so the landlord is happy. if not he can suggest a path that he is happy. then talk to the installer and back and forth and so on

- the fibre then stops at the ONT. there must be a power jack within 50cm of the ONT. the old copper needs to be brought to the ONT. wires and holes will need to be drilled if this is not in the same room. again, landlord may be happy, or if not the ONT be next to the copper then everybody is happy

1. wait for fibre available.
2. when available lodge an order.
3. be very nice to landlord (and owner of the other property) and stock up on bottles of cheap wine.
4. enjoy fast speed

Not entirely correct outside Chorus areas - If there is underground duct it is most likely owned by Chorus, however Enable have no right or permission to use Chorus-owned duct. If Enable intend to do the installation underground they have to install their own duct.

which means they will likely staple onto the fence or dig a trench. that narrows down to 50-50, and that way you can have something to bring to the property owners. as people have said, no chance of giving him a job description BEFORE you apply for fibre. just make sure you know where your fibre ends outside the house when they eventually lay it.

PS your copper does not come over head does it

OK then. I assume that's Northpower and UFF? Enable thrusted 30 metres of new underground duct at my house - a few feet away from the Chorus duct....

Thanks for the replies everyone.
So it sounds like unfortunately I can't pre-empt the process and get consent ready to go for when I place the order, although I could try and explain the likely install they will want it from Enable directly etc.

Currently fibre is sitting down the driveway on the opposite side to the houses, interestingly there are four units and only three microducts.
Looks like they would probably bring it along the fence then have to cut the asphalt to bring it across to the house, then into the garage where the copper comes in.
