Hello, so about 2 weeks ago we got VDSL and ever since I've just been having considerably high ping, with about 65-70 to sydney and about 45 to auckland which is just rediculous I thought, way too high for counter strike. Heres my line status info, also I'm pretty sure this property doesn't have a master splitter. only thing I can see in the status is the downstream line attenuation being 21, isn't that really high?

Sounds like you are on a 16ms DLM profile. For lowest latency you want to be on the 1ms profile, 8ms profiles being the mid-ground.

Generally for your connection to be so bad that it has hit a 16ms profile you have a fault in your connection (most likely within your internal wiring) or you are rebooting your modem alot causing DLM to think your connection is unstable.

I would recommend a master filter installation.

Hmm okay, would you know of any way to get one cheaper than from chorus? its just that they cost $199 from them and that's a quite a bit for just something that only might help...

You can get one for 30 bucks on Trademe. If you need someone to install it for you coffeebaron on this forum can do you a special deal.

what modem do you have? you need to be able to get the delay and INP symbols from the modem to know what DLM profile you are on.

Chorus only charge $199 for a standalone install.

Most ISP's include this as standard for signing up as it's simple a few $ per month extra passed on to the ISP in the wholesale pricing. BigPipe choose not to do this which is how they offer cheaper prices.

OP in this case has already been connected though, which makes the above irrelevant - this would have to be done under a wiring job and nothing to do with install prices.

Like the rest of the thread says, it sounds like an internal wiring issue. If you were interested about which profile you're on, feel free to PM me with your email address and I can have a look for you, however would definitely recommend making some changes to your internal wiring regardless.

Depending on your location (by your latency ontop of the delay value, i suspect not actually in auckland) @coffeebarron does a good deal (and is IMO more reliable and consistant anyway)

Otherwise if your handy, an installation is a relatively simple task to do.

Generally takes a few gel crimps, a VDSL master filter and a line of cat5E for the distance to your modem.

Ironically it's actually more expensive to get it done upfront - chorus charge $10/m for 30 months. That's $300 rather than $199. Crazy to think it makes sense to make it a default for every connection - even for houses that don't need it or already had one.
(I think it might only be spark now that does a master filter install by default on every single VDSL)

Just make sure you know what your getting into before you start buying things. Worst thing you want is to be stuck without internet paying through your teeth to fix a messup.

Thanks for the help guys, also another thing I just wanted to add to this is that on ADSL we were getting 14 mbps down and 1 up, would anyone be able to estimate a distance from my cabinet using those numbers?

Depends on a lot of things including line quality, cable diameter, crosstalk, other interference, but 1.0 - 2.5km.

there is no way to know unless you actually know where the cable goes.

I know where my cable goes because the cabinet is 2 houses down and they have had to repair the cable in the past so ive seen where it was running so can measure the distance (about 75m to my splitter)
