Anyone managed to get Windows 98 talking to Telecom Broadband.

My computer is a bit more modern but my Mother-In-Law has a Win98 machine. We've just got broadband connected with the DLink 502 modem that Telecom hand out. My WinXP machine works fine.

But I'm not getting the Win98 machine to connect. Any advice, other than to chuck the Win98 into the Tasman?

Yeah - upgrade would be nice, but the computer isn't up to XP. Its just used for email and web, so Win98 was ok. It's only broadband that fails...

98 and even 95 works fine with broadband. Maybe you could actually provide some more detail. Is ip address assigned by DHCP server in router, ipconfig /all I think works with 98 but otherwise winipcfg from memory to find out.

Does your computer have a network plug, rather than a usb?
The usb drivers are unreliable and can cause your computer to crash. Also you do not need to insert the cdrom to set up the modem this way. It doesnt install any extra software to slow the computer down.

Basically
1) Plug your modem into the computer through the network connection - not USB
    This is usually a blue cable
    Reset the modem using the hidden button on the back. Hold it down with a drawing pin or pen for 10 seconds.
    You will know when its reset when a few of the lights switch off all together at once. They may come back on
    within a couple of seconds.

2) Set the TCP/IP properties (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network)
    IP Address / Subnet / Gateway should all be automatic
    DNS server addresses should be automatic

3) Restart the computer. Open Internet Explorer. Use the address bar to go to the address
    Http://10.1.1.1/
    Check the instruction manual as this address changes between brands of modems.
    Common ones are 10.1.1.1, 10.0.0.1, 10.1.1.254, 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.254
    192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.254

4) It will prompt you for a username and password.
    Try admin and admin, admin and blank, admin and pass are common defaults.
    You will be taken to the setup website running within the modem / router.
    Find the quick setup part. Use the username and password provided by xtra.
    The username is usually something like youremail.xadsl@xtra.co.nz or something like that.
    If you dont have a username and password - call xtra 0800 22 55 98
    Say 'password reset', and 'yes' to be the evil automated answering minion to be put through to an operator.
    Simply ask what your username and they will give
    you a new password to program into the quick setup.
    Once the quick setup is completed, the modem will restart. Restart the computer and away you go.

Thanks a lot to Spyware and to Raytaylor. Here's my situation.

It's a Sony Vaio without an Ethernet port - it just has USB ports, so I'm using the silvery cable that came with the DLink 502 modem. The modem shows a light for USD connection.

Control Panel > Network shows TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter. Is that right? Should there be a TCP/IP -> USB Modem or something? The TCP/IP settings look ok - obtain an IP address automatically, nothing in Gateway, DNS Configuration is disabled, WINS Confoguration is Use DHCP.

Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections is the one that confuses me. I've got the old Xtra Dial-Up as the default. I've tried Never Dial a Connection, Dial whenever a network connection is not present and Always dial the default. The LAN Sharing dialog and LAN Settings dialog look like the wrong course. The Setup wizard hasn't guided me to anything that works.

The DLink is the default of http://10.1.1.1 and serves setup pages to my XP computer ok.

Trying to load http://10.1.1.1 on the Win98 laptop, it insists I try to dial in to Xtra. Work offline just gives Web Page Unavailable.

One odd thing. When trying to set this up I have had the odd page appear if I typed the full URL but clicking on any link gave the Dial-Up Connection dialog.

Is that enough detail? I'm sorry it's all over the place - I've probably confused matters with some of the settings I've tried out.

Ah... most people use the Ethernet connection as it's faster and easier to setup.

Anyway, maybe you can read up on the manual.

The address if I can remember for the USB connection is actually http://10.1.1.2

If it has not installed the USB networking adapter then you wont be able to get to the web interface of the router.

Check device manager for anything thats not installed and try updating driver for it and pointing it to the drivers for the adsl router. If you cant find drivers for the usb port of the router, thats telling you something, but you could always get a supported USB ethernet adapter and use the ethernet of the router.

Thanks to Manhinli and to Richms for your comments.

Yeah, I'd love to use Ethernet but the Sony Vaio didn't come with it. So it's off to that manual (which I have been going through).

If I try to load http://10.1.1.2 I get the Dial-Up screen. That's one of the problems - how do I persuade it to use the new modem, not the dial up approach?

So I've downloaded a new DLink USB driver (1.7Mb over dial-up...) which installed OK. Where is Device Manager on Win98? Did it exist? The Control Panel has specific icons for Display, Game Controllers etc, nothing for all devices.

Thanks to you all for helping on this archaeological dig. Any new suggestions? How do I get it to stop popping up the Dial-Up dialog?

I think it is in system, but it has being so long. Till you get the USB connection showing as a network adaptor the configuration screen wont load.

When you get the network adapter showing then you should be able to set it to dont dial a connetion to stop the dial up appearing. Or delete all the dialup connections to stop it.

If you cant get another etherner device showing when you run winipcfg with an IP assigned to it then its something you need to keep playing with getting the USB driver installed.

The USB mode does most of the stuff in the driver and the USB connection doesnt actually take ethernet frames over it so thats why they tend to suck - If you cant get it to work then there are heaps of usb ethernet adapters on trademe that you can get for $stuffall

They list 98 and 98se on most of them but that doesnt mean it will work properly on those OS's.

I have a connection, thanks to all you lovely people.

The advice that it was trickier than Ethernet to set up was right. I needed a download from www.dlink.com.au to install a new driver - nothing on the Xtra CD was any help there. That made the DLink modem appear as an option on how to connect to the Internet. I clicked on and suddenly I had a connection.

Phew.

But you were all right - use XP, use Ethernet, check your drivers and read the manual were all the right pointers.

Ummm.... Windows 98 on a broadband connection is just asking for trouble.

I think you'll be hard-pressed to find a freeware Firewall and Antivirus for Windows 98.
Just my 10c worth.

If you are using a router with built in dsl modem, then your router will have a firewall built in - google NAT or Network Address Translation Firewall. Most allow you to block outgoing ports as well.
Wont work like this if you have a usb dsl modem that isnt a router.

And of course there is the wonderful Zone Alarm - guaranteed to half your broadband connection speed, and add 40% to the time it takes to perform most tasks on your computer. Unfortunatly still loved by the technologically illiterate but if it works - it works.

AVG have a free edition still downloadable Grisoft. They no-longer update the software itself and it is an older version but I think the signature database is still regularly updated. Someone correct me if I am wrong on this.

I do suggest people still upgrade to windows xp while they still can purchase it - generally all most windows 98 machines need is some extra ram. I happily ran windows xp on a celeron 333mhz pc for a couple of years with 256mb of ram. You just cant do anything that requires alot of processing power like full screen youtube. Although you still wouldnt have been able to do it in windows 98 anyway.
