Been trying to send an email with 2 images to a business address and I keep getting bounced. I have tried from my Apple Mail and Xtra Mail browser based web mail. The recipient is a legitimate business Tirau.

ihug addresses are no more, with just some half broken redirect available that seldom works IME.

You need to find their current address and send to that.

Spoke to the shop owner and he said this is the first time he has had trouble.

Perhaps the vodafone rep on these forums could comment.

My understanding is that Vodafone have shutdown the old ihug mail server. And there is a redirect to send those emails to another address.

So ask the shop owner for the address that they are getting their emails redirected to. And email that address directly.

Yep as Andrew says ihug.co.nz was shut down 18 months or more ago. Vodafone provide redirects to other email servers, if you did not so that within a time frame then you loose. My guess is either clockman failed to do that or wherever he redirected it is awol or something.

Just tried sending an email to my old ihug address that is supposed to forward to my gmail, it has failed with the same error.

Just spoke to the shop again and they provided me with a "gmail" address. I am presuming this was the redirect email address that has now failed. I also advised the shop to update their website with the new email address. I also advised that they contact Vodafone and I gave them the error code to give to Vodafone: Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 530 Relaying not allowed

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Yes something has definitely gone wrong on the Vodafone end with their forwarding at least for ihug (no idea about other domains).

Recently (~30 January) they changed their system so emails seem to come from something like SRS0<snipped>geekzone.co.nz=forums222666@ihug.co.nz I guess this was to deal with SPF and DKIM fails etc, although it actually increased auto spam detection (because Facebook etc emails aren't coming from Facebook), but I guess it's easy to filter.

But then on about the 8th emails just stopped arriving. I guess senders were getting 530 errors. Weirdly a tiny number of emails have made it through, but very few.

Lets be honest, it was naive to think these forwards would carry on forever. :-)
You can bet as soon it it started to fail, Voda wouldnt be putting much effort into fixing it.

IHUG is gone. Anything attached to it should be considered dead in the water. Anyone who thinks they really really need it, go buy the domain and setup your own system.

Just spoke to the business owner this morning and he said: "its weird as he just received this morning emails addressed to his ihug.co.nz address" but "he will be changing his advertised email address as he does not know how many other emails have bounced, therefore how much business he may have lost"

It sounds like Vodafone have dropped the ball on this one and MAY not have communicated succinctly and often enough with their clients.

As I mentioned above, some emails have been making it through. Particularly this morning but I also had one on Sunday. I wouldn't say it's definitely completely fixed though, as I know some others didn't although I can't be sure the sending server didn't just stop trying for now.

I agree it's a bad idea to rely on the domain for anything important like business. That's been the case since it turned forwarding only, and in reality probably before. (It wasn't uncommon for emails to not make it through before they went forwarding only. Actually in some ways it was better when they started forwarding only.) But clearly Vodafone are still fiddling with the config hence the change about 2 weeks ago. (I guess they're possibly finally looking at doing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Rewriting_Scheme properly.) So it isn't something they've just forgotten about even if we didn't have their comment I linked above. (Actually the fact they are fiddling with it could easily be the cause of the failure.) And while I can't speak for Vodafone, I find it's fairly unlikely they will just intentionally end forwarding without telling everyone given the likely outcry.

Yes it could completely fall apart and they won't bother fixing it, but even that is probably not that likely at this time. Maybe a few years from now. Managing email isn't easy hence they partly abandoned it but there are surely a lot of solutions that they could use to at least temporarily re-enable support. Even if it's just a 1-2 month emergency 'inform all senders/change your email now' scenario, rather then deal with all the bad press and hassle and lost customers likely including business ones from just suddenly abandoning it without warning. More likely when they decide it's starting to get more trouble then it's worth, they'll fix it but warn customers it will or may end in x months. (They did make a push when going forwarding only to get people to move on, they'll probably have to do something similar again if they really want to end it.) Sure when it does break, it may not have as high priority as it would have if it were an actively advertised and sold service, but that's a different point.

As for what Manila support told people, that seems a classic case of 'someone didn't really know so made a guess and told low level support to tell people that'. Frankly, I would trust low level support (wherever they are located) about as far as I can throw them on on something like this, and I'm not fit or ever been good as throwing! BTW, you can't buy the domain, it still belongs to Vodafone and there's little chance they will be selling it anytime soon.
