I saw this notification https://antenno.app/cd58p

So are Spark rolling out their own Fibre in Tirau? Or is this more likely a town in a couple of months thing in conjunction with UFF (this is UFF not Chorus area)? Or maybe they are laying some backhaul fibre to somewhere?

wouldn't be surprised given that Chorus want to be an ISP with their next Gen ONTs having wifi capability and potentially no need for an ISP router. Everyone is looking for new revenue streams

Highly likely this is Fibre for Distribution/core or a large customer rather than Residential.

Given it's location my bet is on the earlier.

From what I have heard the ONT wifi is terrible - I don't think Chorus are allowed to be an RSP and cannot have end users except for premium products like DFAS

Do you have something to support the assertation that "Chorus want to be an ISP"?

If you search for 'ONT RGW' on the Chrous site (e.g. https://sp.chorus.co.nz/product/rgw-ont-residential-gateway-ont/overview) you find that they are pitching the 3rd Gen ONT as a RGW "value-add" for ISPs, presumably for an additional fee

Possibly, but rather substantial work if its over the next couple of months. This is a fully completed UFB Ultra Fast Fibre area.

3rd Gen is a next Gen. No I wont give further details for reasons I am sure you can ascertain

Both the 3rd Generation ONT (Nokia G-140W-C) and Hyperfibre (XS-250WX-A) have the capability of running in RGW mode.
RSPs can order with the RGW on or off, then they manage the RGW themselves. Other than enabling the Router and providing the management infrastructure, we are largely not in the equation.

There is no step here, at all, to Chorus trying to be an RSP - that's a big leap for you to make. The IP layer is all the RSP's.

I believe the regulatory rules have changed or about to change that removes hurdles for this to be a thing. The capability will be there however if the commercial viability is a different story. In such a small market a desired ROI may not be achieved in the medium term. The future? I guess we will see.
