Will current GSM handsets such as the Nokia N95 operate on the NGN? I have been googling for the answer to tis for a week now. Thanks in advance

You would have to find the US version, the one that operates in 850MHz.

So any cell that operates in 850mhz (are there other frequencies for the NGN?) will be sweet?

Any handset that does 850 + 2100 UMTS is OK.

Just be aware that 850 GSM is NOT 850 UMTS. Virtually all handsets support 850 GSM but Telecom are no longer building a GSM network.

I would strongly recommend checking out manufacturer websites for tech specs of devices.

You are looking for WCDMA2100 + WCDMA850.

NealR: I would strongly recommend checking out manufacturer websites for tech specs of devices.

You are looking for WCDMA2100 + WCDMA850.

And, as alluded to above, there can be regional differences between what a particular handset supports (ie. a Nokia N95 sold in NZ may have different band support than one sold in the US)...
