Way back - like 30 years or so, when Spark was known as Telecom (IIRC) - it was possible to add 'alias' phone accounts to one's main account. Like, if your main account was idiotrump@xtra.co.nz, you could also add another four or so aliases to that main address, like moronictrump@xtra.co.nz, spacewastertrump@xtra.co.nz, and so on. Any mail directed to the alias accounts would arrive at the main account.

Problem for me now, many years later, is I'm getting heaps of spam at those 'throwaway' alias addresses, so I'd like to close them. How do I do that? I'd prefer not to call 0800 22 55 98 and spend hours on hold if I can avoid it. Advice please.

I'm sure you have lots of reasons for staying with Xtra, but do keep an open mind about migrating email away from them.

So to not answer your question, check outlook.com, outlook.co.nz, gmail.com etc to see if you can get a nice email address e.g. first.last or companyname (without 3 digit numbers bolted on the end).

Once you have a nice new address, spend time migrating off xtra.co.nz whilst you can do it at your leisure. I was forced to make a rather hasty exit from paradise.net.nz and you will be amazed how many things are connected to your old address. This will also give you ISP mobility if you are still with Spark.

I cant +1 this enough, I was in the same boat, told it would forward forever and I had all the time in the world to migrate everything, then Vodafone made the decicion to stop forwarding, I got everything except my LastPass and had to restart that from scratch, it was not pretty

Guys, thanks for your input, but I didn't say I wanted to dump my Spark email address, just close off some old aliases.

Bung, you got it right. Only thing is, those instructions are for an earlier version of Spark mail.

My version:

Click on IP:

Click 'Create and manage aliases

Save and exit.

Couldn't be simpler (I'm still in shock 😵)

PS: No, that's not my email address. But spammers are welcome to use it :-)

You'll probably be seeing version 7.10.6 appearing from next week - but don't worry, the actions to manage your aliases are exactly the same.

The menu you get by clicking on the top-right icon is often referred to as the "Avatar Menu" as this is your personal avatar (by default, it is your initials, but you can upload any image you want).  The various account commands moved under here when the UI was recently upgraded from 7.8.x to 7.10.x

@cheshirecat do you know if the help instructions will catch up with the revised UI?

That I don't know, as it is managed by a different team in Spark.  However, the help text within the webmail application is always up to date.
