I'm moving into a area where Telecom is doing some fast (Fiber 30Mbs/3Mbs) broadband trial, all sweet waiting to signup when I enquire about the Static IP, telecom drop me a bomshell saying I cannot have a static IP on this trial broadband!! . I'm not sure they can provide other broadband plans (PRO) with the static IP etc.
Any one living in this area (Mission Heights - Flat Bush) using a static IP please comment?

Alternative is to use DDNS but I have seen issuse with paid DDNS in the past

And you said yourself, its a trial. Why waste (little) time on setting up Statics on a trial system when in 3 months time it could be shutdown ? (Hopefully for you they dont, cause 30mbps would be nice

)

Home based business, with Exchange 2007 and to run my own webserver.

True, Original Trial was suppose to end July 2007 then this trial has been extended every year until July 2009, Telecom CSR said this may be extended to another year, when the trial broadband is free, I don’t mind taking this trial plan

I'm waiting for answers from Telecom whether they can provide other standard broadband plans on my second line in this area.

Probably just keeps getting extended because they dont want to spend the money putting in DSL when the fibre can just continue to work.

I am interested to know if you have only fibre going into your house, then gets converted to copper, or do you have both fibre and copper lines running into the house?

Telecom is considering my request for a static IP on this plan, they need 4 days to make a decision! Technically it’s possible to assign IP to this new trial connection or any broadband connection in this area. My use of this IP is for legitimate home based business, hope Telecom will continue to support home based businesses.

I'm happy to pay full price for the second standard broadb (Pro) and line if Telecom NZ listens.

Plan B is to approach other providers which I already did, not sure they can put their hands in this trial area

What I know is ther is a Singnet ST2000 box in the Garage, possibly the copper terminates there, fiber may be up to the local exchange, I may be wrong here. I'm yet to explore my Singnet ST2000. moving in 3 weeks time

A Signet ST2000 box is a "home hub". It could house any number of components for DSL, TV, Networking Phone etc

Normally a fibre connection terminates into a tranciever which then goes into a ethernet router or firewall which then plugs into your network switch/hub. (of course it could go straight from the transceiver to the switch/hub but that would be a tad insecure)

I don't know what they have rolled out there but i'd be surprised if they could call it an FTTH trial if you didnt literally have an optical fibre terminating on your property.

I am pretty sure the Mission Heights trail is BPON based, all newer ones a GPON. Regardless there will be an ONT (fibre to copper transciever) somewhere in or on the house, most likely in the Signet cabinet, this will have both an ethernet port and a POTS output although depending on the ONT it may infact rely on a VOIP ATA to provide POTS service.

The latter GPON services that Telecom are trailing with Xnet utilise a Linksys WRP400 router that includes a VOIP ATA.

Vodafone happy to provide all services in Mission Heights, they even generated a Static Ip for me!!. I have my doubts anyhow the teche will have a surprise on the connection day. I heard from TelecomNZ no other provider can touch these fibre cabins.
Some questions, no one can answer me
Why do they have these restrictions in the new developments?
If I don’t sign up for this trial, I will not have Broadband in my new property
Why can't Telecom NZ provide other standard Broadband service in this area?
Yes I'm happy to trial on my second line, provide me standard broadband on my first line.
Xnet or WorldXchange involved?
Then YES there will be problems

WHY TELECOM NZ IS FORCING ME TO TRIAL THIS BROADBAND IN MY NEW PROPERTY? AND NOT GIVING ANY OTHER OPTIONS?.
