2wire router locked to Telecom?

Telecom says that the 2wire routers they are supplying 'are locked to Telecom's network, and settings' and will not work with any other ISP in New Zealand.

Changing the username/password will 'not help' as they are 'specially configured' for only Telecom's broadband network.

True? Hacks?

From memory, you might be able to use them on Orcon LLU connection where you don't need an username and password. You might have any issues changing the user to a non telecom domain.

I believe this is true. It appears that the username realm of the modem has been locked to @xtra.co.nz or similar.

So unless your ISP ignores the realm in the AAA server, I believe you're out of luck using it with another ISP.

i wonder if it would be as simple as saving the config to your hdd and editing it and then reload/restoring the config

Anyone had any luck getting their TCNZ supplied one to work with another ISP yet?

I assume the only way you can get it done is by changing firmware if possible.

Yes, it’s true, the firmware is hard coded to only accept PPP usernames that include the Telecom realms (xtra.co.nz, xtrabb.co.nz etc).

I am unaware of any way to hack the firmware as only signed releases can be loaded onto the 2wire routers.

I'd love to return it's sealed box and wipe the contract (Still receive the service however) or sell it off but of course, it's locked limiting it's possibilties.

I saw some codes for these in the form of "5225-2374-WG62-22AS= -BJ7P" do they do anything?

On just about a daily basis I get asked should I take the contract with a modem or get my own, I always recommend folk supply their own, several have been bullied into taking the contract and modem with a "well we dont support other brand modems" line, well thats how uninformed joe blogs hears it when they ringup Telecom CSR. The modems supplied by Telecom are nothing special, for a modest sum you can purchase as good if not better modems and give yourself contract flexibility.

I had no choice in the matter, I had to take the contract and the "free" modem. I'm very happy with my old but rock-stable router and hence have never opened the seal on the "2wire" even though I presume it's a good unit.

Gone are the days when suppling own hardware meant you could join a provider without a term often, it was cheaper to join no-term during the gold Vodafone days) . I loathe contracts.
