I want to buy an iPhone. Is it better to buy one now, or wait until the announcement for a new one and hope Telecom bring it here at a lower or equal price as the 3g iPhone on Vodafone?

The next iPhone may cost more than the current one as the exchange rate has dropped a lot since it was released.

I have an iPhone 3G and I'd love to move to XT. I'm also an impatient person when it comes to buying things, but in this case I've decided to force myself to wait until WWDC to see what announcements are made, and then if Telecom secure the rights to sell the new iPhone (assuming one is announced).

Admittedly this could be another couple months away before a new iPhone is actually released, so if you can handle waiting that long then I would. If that's too long then get one now if you're ready to.

I'd wait for a bit. All of Apples other products have increased in price quite drastically (something like 20% relative to the previous pricing) so the iPhone may or may not go the same way. There are murmurings of there being a bigger variety of models in the next refresh, but irrespective of that, I'd be tempted to wait and see as the new models will almost certainly be announced at WWDC in a few weeks. If you don't like that one, then there will no doubt be plenty of them for sale on TradeMe from people upgrading to the 3rd model.

I'd certainly want to wait for the v3.0 firmware, as the v2 firmware is sadly lacking in functionality compared to many of the other devices currently available.

As discussed in other places there are real issues re the upcoming expected iPhone (i'll call it iPhone 3G+) hardware refresh.

Assuming that there will be separate 850Mhz and 900Mhz UMTS versions then there are a number of possible scenarios for those waiting for a hardware refresh (of which I am one...)

1. BEST CASE

Telecom secures a deal to sell the 850Mhz/2100 Mhz version in NZ. Vodafone secures the 900Mhz version.
In practical terms if you think you might switch networks in NZ the only version to get would be the 850Mhz version as for the most part you'll still get 3G service on vodafone if you weren't happy with XT.
The "vodafone" 900Mhz iPhone 3G+ will never work on XT.

2. POSSIBLE CASE

Vodafone gets the 900MHz version. Telecom remains in negotiation for the 850Mhz. No iPhone 3G+ on XT at launch.

3. WORST CASE

We don't see the 850Mhz version in NZ. Have to wait for quad band UMTS chips.

Yeah that is quite weird :S
Edit: Its my assumption its a temporary error as the boss of Gen-i has been using one on Xt for ages

At the end of the day, its up to you. Get one now and watch events unfold, or wait and hope for a better day.
