Just wondering if you can use the
SE-W705

as a portable modem etc and if so what speeds to expect?

Yes you can. This link tells you how. http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/phones/detailed/useyourphoneasamodem/w705?lc=en&cc=hk

Speed you will get will depend on whether by USB cable or bluetooth, speeds up to full 3g (same as a data device)
All devices do this and they come with USB cables. Most the devices synch with PC for phone book music etc. Pretty cool.
