Hi folks

I have a Telecom broadband connection with a Thomson Speedtouch ST536 v6 ADSL modem. I can connect to the Internet ok with an ethernet cable connecting a laptop to the ADSL modem. I am having trouble trying to get it to work with a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router, connecting via the laptop's WLAN interface.

I can connect to the Internet ok when cabled like this:

RJ45 phone jack <> Speedtouch modem <> Linksys wireless router WAN port <> laptop.

I can connect ok to the wireless router over the laptop's wireless network interface (browsing to 192.168.1.1) but I can't ping external addresses, including the host address of the ADSL modem (222.153.250.192)

When cabled as above I can reach the Internet. When I remove the cable between the laptop and the router and enable wireless, I can only reach the wireless modem (192.168.1.1) but cannot ping anything else.

I am not sure that the default gateway I've specified - namely, the host address of the modem - is correct. DHCP is enabled on the wireless router.

I'm not exactly sure of what to expect from these devices in combination. They work fine separately. The Linksys router was working OK in a small office LAN connected to a Telstra cable modem, but in that siutuation wireless was not being used.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

had this problem last week. if you change the router ip address to 192.168.2.1 you should be sweet. Also lynksys tech support is real good so you can call them.

Can you ping the ST536?
I believe that by default they have an IP of 192.168.1.254

If you can ping it, I would suggest the easiest fix would be to statically set the IP and gateway on your PC.

The gateway address should be the modem IP I think ...

Okay... Now it doesn't work any more.

I don't understand why changing the router's ip to 192.168.2.1 worked; and I don't know why it no longer works. What changed was I unplugged both boxes to move them under a bed where they won't get in the way. Plenty of signal strength, so why not. When I replugged everything - no Internet.

Something else changed as well. Now the Speedtouch modem can be browsed to on 192.168.1.254 (was 222.153.250.192) and ALSO can be browsed to on 125.239.114.236. I did nothing (knowingly) to reset the modem.

I can reach the router via wireless but it can't see the modem. I can browse the Internet when connected directly to the modem with an ethernet cable, though interestingly the modem itself claims not to be able to see its designated DNS servers (still 202.27.158.40 and 202.27.156.72 like one would expect). However I can in fact resolve DNS names into IP address OK.

It's all very confusing. Anyone have any ideas? Most frustrating!

Let me explain here a little. Your modem here is straddling two networks - the internet and your local area network. With a "finger in each pie" so to speak, it requires an IP address in each - so your modem has two IP addresses. One for Internet (WAN side) which is the 125.239.114.236 address. This address will likely change every time you restart the modem or when your connection resyncs (which can happen several times a week ... or can go weeks on end without doing it). The LAN IP is 192.168.1.254 and this will never change unless you specifically change it. You can access your modem from you LAN via either IP, but most people only ever use the LAN IP to access it as it doesn't change.

Firstly your modem is likely trying to ping the Telecom DNS servers - and they don't respond to ping, so this is why it appears that you can't access the DNS when in fact you can.

Personally I've no experience setting up a WiFi router like you describe. What does the instruction manual say?

Perhaps you should set your PC's default gateway to 192.168.1.254.

Aha! Setting the router's default GW as you suggested did the trick. Now both laptops have Internet, though interestingly I can't get into the router itself via wireless any more. Not to worry.
