We just got a letter from Telecom, the basic message is:

  • Go Large will be closed down on 30th October.

  • If you switch to Big Time from Go Large before 30th October you will get $10 off for the first 3 months

  • If you do nothing, you will automatically get switched to the Explorer plan

Explorer plan is $49.95, has a 10GB cap and is ADSL2+ full speed down/up (But dialup speeds after you exceed the cap)

Frown

Go Large is the last remaining 128k upload plan they offer, no surprise to see it being grand fathered

Big Time and Go Large have apparently been using practically the same traffic management systems/rules since Big Time started, it's basically $10 more per month for FS upload.

Worth it if you have multiple computers/users at your place imo.

I think they are (if you read their Terms and Conditions, I think it says they can), and they are asking you with that letter that got sent out.

I got the same letter this morning, Once again monopolistic telecom rears their ugly head. I dont recall seeing in the contract I signed with them that they could change my plan, or charge me $10 more per month for essentially the same service (I dont upload much so, I dont really care about FS upload). Once again shafted by Telecom. I'll probably end up going to Big Time, as I would go through their recommended Explorers 10gb in a day. Might have a chat to my mate at the com com and see what he thinks.

IIRC its been in the TOS for a while now with most ISP's, they only have to provide 30days notice

I think of it as a good excuse to get a faster upstream connection...

I think of it as, being forced to pay $10 extra a month for an already decidedly average product.

Nobody is forcing you to get Big Time. You can choose any other plan or switch to a different ISP.

Yes, but what other ISP's have plans with unlimited DL's, see my point?

Yes I do see your point. It's the reason I got Go Large to begin with and the same reason I am switching to Big Time.

But they still aren't making you do anything. Why not blame the other ISPs for not providing unlimited plans as the reason you have to get Big Time?...

Though there are a few ISPs actually... Gasp (NZ Wireless) for example. However that costs even more and international speeds are only 256kbit down and up
