I was reading today that operators and the CDG are looking at ratifying a new CDMA spec by 2007 that could offer 1Gbps download speeds. You have to wonder what sort of services would use this bandwidth?

Interesting that Voda continually say that CDMA is a dead-end technology with no future. Telecom are looking at upgrading EVDO to Rev A. next year which will give 3.1Mbps download and 1.8Mbps upload. This revision is real and not some lab experiment.

When you think about it we literally put up with 9600 or 14400 mobile dial-up for years. Now look at the progress.....

Telecom CDMA:
2002 - 1xRTT - 153Kbps
2004 - EVDO - 2.4Mbps
2006 - Rev A. - 3.1Mbps
Beyond 2007 - 1Gbps

Yes so the question I have is what are we going to do with all that mobile data bandwidth, irrespective of the technology.

I would guess it would eventually be aimed to replace our landlines and landline based internet connections.... however as long as the prices are high, most people will not be attracted to it (exceptions of course).

Mobile broadband (hmm, isn't this the brand name TNZ has adopted?)...

Anyway, the idea of having my own non-tethered high speed connection that follow me is great and I am waiting for it.

I currently have a 10mbps cable modem connection at home but it is fixed. I have both GPRS and EV-DO devices, and while using both technologies gives me coverage almost anywhere in the world, a more spread availability and reduced price would be great.

If only mobile operators (well, and PSTN too) worked on the basis of cheaper price, with higher penetration rate... I understand it is sort of a catch 22: technology uptake relies on critical mass, and critical mass can not be obtained if the technology early adopters don't step up to take the thing to the next level.

Woosh for example is a great idea, perhaps with a bad implementation (or too big competition?).

I guess the biggest innovation is the improved upload speed. With Rev A. it is 1.8Mbps. So this means people can be 'givers' rather than just 'takers'.

Pricing is the kicker but then I vaguely recall paying $5 p/hour for dial-up (14.4) years ago. Now look what you can get for all you can eat!

Would speeds up 1Gbps mean the end of the LAN and the rise of the WWAN?

the question is..... how far will the price fall?
i'm already downloading my MP3s while in a cafe - but that's wifi. one day it might be reasonably priced for me to do so over cdma?

Who knows. I guess the "Telecom doesn't want to sink their landlines/adsl/wifi services" logic comes into play here.

yep - xtra's pop3 servers being case and point.
can't get to them via cmda.

Of course you can get to Xtra's POP/SMTP servers via CDMA you just need to be an Xtra customer. It costs about $2.50 p/month to have an Xtra email account - less than a glass of beer.

i understood you needed to be connected via xtra to get to xtra's pop3 - has this changed? or have they allowed you to pay to connect from elsewhere

There are always alternatives.... like running/hiring your own mail servers. That way you get more control and aren't tied down to one ISP and its policies.

Secure Remote Email is for access to an Xtra POP account from another ISP/network i.e. connecting via Voda.

This is not required when connecting via CDMA because Xtra see the CDMA IP range as being internal Telecom. However you still need to subscribe to an email account from Xtra for $2.50 p/month as you need a login/password to access Xtra POP/SMTP servers.

yes I think this is interesting. What could be done with mobile web servers? Mobile cameras? Etc.

Exactly, back on topic Timbo. Does open up a world of possibilities doesn't it? I like the camera idea but what else would people do?

With 1Gbps would companies purchase one device that offered shared bandwidth to multiple users - like WiFi with mobile for back haul?

Have already a number of WiFi hotspot + 3G (CDMA and GSM) backhaul products on the web. 3GSM will struggle with only 64kbps uplink at first but EVDO right now would be a reasonable experience.

I would think Telecom and Vodafone will be bringing such devices out very soon.
