If you're buying it new from a store you should be able to get them to set up the new phone, and do an ESN change to move the number from your old to your new.

If you're buying second hand you'll need to make sure the new phone isn't already connected (prepay, money owing, etc.etc), then you still need to get it programmed and an ESN change done. If it's second hand I expect a store will want to charge you to do the change.

If you're meaning swapping the contacts from one to the other it gets a whole lot more fun, but some of the stores do have sync boxes that should be able to do it.

Jp.

Changing your phone number from one phone to another (secondhand).
$0 - $20 at a dealer. (Telecom do not pay a dealer to do this, hence the charge).

Changing your phone number from one phone to another (new phone from a dealer).
$0 at most dealers.

Changing your -contacts- from one phone to another (new or secondhand).
$0 at all dealers that have the 'Synapse Phone Transfer' system that was provided to dealers by Telecom. You should not be charged for this.

3205 is end of life, but still a nice phone. You can get the Sanyo 8200 for $299 at the moment.

I would go for the 6235, its a great little phone, not too expensive. The 3205 really is getting a little long in the tooth

i saw the 8200 for cheap on the weekend. I considered upgrading the better half but her 8100 does the trick. The 3205 is a decent handset and if the prices hit the rock bottom like once before a bargain could be had.
I am thinking I might cross the line to an Apache depending on when it arrives

I once did an ESN change through Telecom's call centre at no cost. I just had to advise them of my phone number, the ESN of the new handset, and the make and model of the old and new handsets.

It's also important that the new handset have some charge in the battery, because the operator will instruct you to switch it on and enter some codes to program it.

Yep - no problem their either.

Sometimes what happens though is the 123 staff member cant be bothered walking a customer through programming, so knowing they are pretty much untraceable (because the customer is happy and hasnt asked for their name), they say "I have done the change, now go to your nearest dealer, and they will program the handset for free".

Customer comes in to a privately owned retail shop and gets angry when our retail staff wont program the unit for nothing (that they bought from say, Leemings, and ESN changed with Telecom).

moan moan moan, best I stop now.

I was going to PM and see if you knew anything about that. Thanks tony

In terms of tracing a customer service call, surely they are logged with the number that dials by the handler so with some (maybe even minimal) effort you could figure out who you spoke to. Logging is common sense especially if you have recurring problems

Correct, but the customer doesnt want to go chasing Telecom about it, they just want their work done for free, and the dealer is already wasting valuable time without spending hours on hold trying to find someone to admit they fobbed a customer off, and simply recieving a 'sorry' or 'we dont know' or 'didnt happen'. That generates negative revenue as well.

Ahh, and back we go to the customer that screams loudest.

I do so hate those ones. Too many customers believe that if they just keep complaining the company will give in and do what they want (as it's easier than arguing the point for hours or days on end). Personally I prefer that companies stick to their guns. Otherwise we just end up with more customers that have complained in the past and got what they want, so they just keep on doing it (and driving us slowly (or very rapidly) mad in the process).

Just my 2c to add to that argument. ;p
