hi can anyone tell me if the phone is a good cheap reilalble phone for a outdoor worker , who phones usally only last a year .

I brought one of these as a backup phone, I guess you pay for what you get - the build quality seems OK although it's a very light phone.

The menu is very basic and the graphics remind me of windows 3

No option on this puppy to add additional memory cards either.

However it's a 3g phone at an amazing price so over all for the price I would say it's worth it.

The Warehouse have it on special at the moment - $79 including sim pack and car charger - you can't beat that!

I think the R100 only has 3G 850, so no access to city capacity 2100 sites

The 2100MHz capacity is just an "insurance"... The main network is 850MHz so that's what you need.

I bought an R100 from The Warehouse last week on impulse when they had an additional 20% off all cellphones special. Amazingly, for $63.00 I got an R100, 2x SIM card connection packs with $20 credit on each, plus a car charger. (TWH system stated 2x connection packs, so I was surprised when they produced two of them) Compared with my Nokia 6120, it doesn't come close, but it's certainly great value and does a lot for the money. Biggest downside is only 40MB memory, not expandable. The browser gives "not enough memory" errors on some sites, but it does a very good job otherwise, including a reasonable email client, and on the XT 3G network it feels fast.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

TWH had a "Friends and family" mailer last Thurs/Friday stating 20% off all phones (even on top of existing specials) which brought the price down from their current special of $79 to $63. None of the advertising I've seen has stated "2x connection packs" but that's what was loaded into their system at Milford branch when they scanned it. I saw it with my own eyes... it felt like winning a minor lotto prize! Without hesitation, they dumped a box of connection packs on the counter and asked me to pick two (so I could pick my own numbers). I'd say someone at HO keyed an error, but I could hardly complain, could I? Not sure if it's still like that. Best to call in and see. Let us know if you're lucky.

Yes SIM's are included when you purchase a Telecom phone under the Xmas offers.

The R100 is only a WCDMA device (384 kbps) AFAIK. However for $79 at TWH it doesn't get much better than that.

I've been trying to find out whether the R100 is something better than just WCDMA. The Telecom site at: http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/prepaid/telecom-r100-black suggests that it's HSDPA (3Mbs down) /HSUPA (1Mbs up) but it maybe a typo. I ran a few tests from Speedtest.net (the mobile version as speedtest.net won't load through insufficient memory) and got widely variable results that didn't prove anything.

Yep that caught me out I thought it was HSDPA because it was specified on the Telecom site but the specs are burried at the back of the manual - screen capture is here
