i re-flashed my htc touch pro2 with a gsm rom, it has signal issue with my XT sim card.
i'm wondering, is WCDMA a 'cdma' so i need to re-flash my phone with cdma version rom?
previously my phone worked fine with a vodafone sim card, but that sim card could be gsm card that's why the phone was ok.
anybody has any suggestions?

The HTC Touch Pro2 works on the 900/2100 3G frequencies used by Vodafone.

It does not support the 850MHz frequency used by XT and will not work on the network. It is only suitable for using on Vodafone or 2degrees.

He means 900/2100

Vodafone NZ 3G network is 900/2100

Just to clarify the answers. Both Telecom XT and Vodafone 3G are WCDMA networks.

WCDMA is 3G. GSM is 2G.

Current WCDMA devices support both 2G and 3G. This is good if you travel overseas and need roaming.

Howerver, each service uses different bands. As said Vodafone uses 900/2100 WCDMA and Telecom XT uses 850 WCDMA.

You device does not support 850 WCDMA. It's a hardware limitation and there's no software that will change that.

hi thanks guys for quick replys!
to clarify, i got my touch pro 2 from shanghai, but not sure where it's originally from: it doesn't have any carrier's name on it. i talked to telecom stuff, and was told this 850 band thing. i did find 850 on my device, since the network/band selection is set to auto, i'd assume it will switch to 850 when needed?
further finding is i can use it with xt sim in center auckland, but not from where i live - east auckland. after reading an article here at geekzone, i think it's because center auckland has 2100 coverage while where i live doesn't? but why my phone doesn't work on 850 then? the phone's not with me now but i'll have another look tonight. hopefully post a screen capture so someone maybe able to diagnose it for me :)
and yes telecom does have touch pro2, do you think if i can get hold a copy of their rom and re-flash my phone it would help? what if i just re-flash the radio-rom not the whole system, would that help too?

Worth mentioning XT does have 2100 coverage in major cities and towns. Not full coverage like the 850 band but the phone, if flashed correctly would work in those areas.

Just had a look at the Telecom site. Nice fone but rather expensive even on a 24 month plan. I can see why people in the US are slow to take on the Nexus One. Their carriers subsidized plans seem to be way better than here in NZ..

Reflashing the phone with different firmware won't work as the radio chipset won't support the 850 WCDMA frequency.

i got my phone half a year ago from shanghai, cost me $850, now it costs about 600, way cheaper than its price here in nz.

i just had a look of htc website, got this:

Network
HSPA/WCDMA:

Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz

Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:

Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)

i wanna cry now...

will have to sell it since i'll stick with my xt sim card...
