Do you mean SIM Locked? Just pop a SIM in there and see if it works..

"external gps" refers to some other GPS unit, that phone doesn't have GPS.

The OKTA Touch is a CDMA device, so it only works on Telecom's old network, nothing else.

As for the GPS, it's not functional with the original software.

I assume it would be unlocked since no other network uses cdma in NZ. It could possibly be used on sprint or verizon in the US but they might run on different bands? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Sprint and Verizon are both Network operators in the USA. Telecom own the Only CDMA Cellphone network in NZ

Sprint will not activate imported phones. You may be able to connect it to MetroPCS or Cricket in the US (they both allow compatible devices), and possibly Verizon (I don't know whether non-Verizon devices are allowed).

I presume by unlocked, you mean able to burn ROMs....

As a person with one running 6.5, it will take you about 15mins to put a new rom and radio on it to enable GPS

Can't answer the question about locked/unlocked, but can assure you that the internal GPS does work on the Okta Touch.  For example, refer: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=6&topicid=30244&page_no=4.  But, apart from that thread, my Okta Touch (which I still have, even though I have upgraded to the Galaxy S!!)  which runs the bog standard WM6.1 that was released by telecom (no flashing/modding) runs the GPS fine.  Do note that it can take some time to get a lock on satellites (man, is the GS just soooooo much better, especially with t-b-t navigation enabled in Maps now).

If you "unlock" it and burn a new radio, it halves the time of a GPS lock!

The radio you want for best GPS reception is 3.42.50

My old one is actually for sale for $50 if anyone wants it. Running 6.5 but a bit rough around the edges physically... pull the screen protector off and it'd be mint on the front. The silver has worn of the camera ring though.

As per previous posts... The device is not "locked", except that it won't work on any other New Zealand network, since no one else runs a CDMA network.

Can you install a software update? Yes, if you follow instructions to load third party supplied ROMs, at your risk.

I'm wondering if the OP is thinking "locked" because the most popular way to flash the firmware was known as "coke unlocker"?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5057639&postcount=3

As opposed to network locked....

I probably should have put this in my first reply but after my 5th 14hr day, the mind gets a bit slow. Yay for friday!

If you need SPC's or AKEYs for the phone I may be able to find them.  PM me your ESN and I will see what I can find.

But it's not really going to matter since CDMA is going to get switched off all together in 18 months or so and EVDO Highspeed broadband on CDMA disappears in about 11 days.
