Hey all, I hear that the $12 topup for texts does not last 30 Days from the time the phone is topped up as in the case of my sons phone being connectd today.
I hear that his credit will run out on the 1st of the month, no matter when it is connected or topped up.

Is this true....???????

If it is Telecom are ripping customers off?

What do you mean by "$12 topup for texts"? Do you mean the Text Anyone 2500 text extra?

Telecom have always operated on a calendar month basis - where each period begins on the 1st of each month. You can make up your mind on whether this is deliberately ripping people off.

XT Prepaid credit lasts 12 months from day of last top up.

Considering a phone was givn to a kid today, he is feeling a little agreived that he will only use his phone for 12 days and have to top up for his texts again.
No where does it say that the phone will need to be topped up on the 1st of the month.
So who wins there, the customer. Nope
So you top yer phone up for the 5000 texts today and lose the remaining balance on the 31st of December,   one does not get the value out of the credit aye?

Yipes I think I will buy the kid a new phone and go to 2degrees.

i believe telecom now actually does the month when you first enable the txt addon. so for example if you enable it on the 20th of December it would run out on the 20th of jan 2011, also you pay 20 cents per txt till you hit $12  on 2Degrees they take the 10 dollars off you first then you can use the 1000/2000 txts.

the credit lasts for 1 year from the time of topup. you can top up at any time you like.

when you buy a plan though (which is what I think you are asking about), it last the rest of that calendar month from when you buy it.

so this month, unfortunately, he will only get 8 or so days usage out of the txt plan.
Next month though (and every month from now on), his plan will start afresh on the 1st and of course from now on he will get a full month out of it every month.

yes arguably it's a waste for that first month, but you do get $10 free credit when you join, and $10 more when you register online, so it's not like it has cost you anything. (if he is only using txts then he will have $8 left still without topping up at all)

when the first rolls around though he won't need to topup straight away either because the txts are billed 10c/txt for the first 120, then the remaining 4880 are free.

If you want to go to 2Degrees you won't need a new phone, you can just buy a sim and stick it in the telecom phone. however if it is mass txt messaging he really wants to do then 2Degrees are nowhere near as good as XT.

I think the best 2Degrees text offer is 2000 txts for $10

the other thing to remember about 2Degrees is that the minimum amount you can topup is $20 at a time. with Telecom you can topup $10 if you like.

Has it changed?  I had heard that but couldn't see it anywhere on the website.

ah, interesting.  maybe websiote is not updated yet.

I suggest the OP do the same - check your balance on YourTelecom and see what it says about expiry.

The way the text plan works is that you will get charged 20c for the first 60 text messages, then any subsequent text messages after that up til 2500 will be zero rated.

Therefore if within the 12 days (I believe I heard you say) that your son has his phone and only sends a few text messages he will be charged them at 0.20c. E.g. if he only sends 4 he will be charged 80c.
