Will 1RXTT (standard CDMA2000) work effectively with VoIP?

After the disaster that was Asterisk which crashed and wouldn't even install properly letalone run, and my stupidly quiet stuffed landline that you can't hear on a normal phone letalone a "freedom" mobile switched PABX.

I want to buy a harrier and install a SIP softphone using the telecom 1GB promo to tunnel through to iTalk bypassing freedom and asterisk altogether

However, unsure of the latency, most of time will be using the EVDO which I know works well.

Remember that both Vodafone and Telecom New Zealand explicitly disallow the use of VoIP services over their cellular data network (Vodafone always, Telecom apparently only on this 1GB promotion).

But neither seem to block it, anyway, they physically can't without harming the service.

It's going to be the future of mobiles so we would be doing some free beta testing...

The T&C's of all Vodafone data plans since they launched their 3G network all exclude VoIP.

Telecom not allowing VoIP is whierd in some respects anyway - considering the money they are pumping into their NGN and the cool features it's going to have such as video conferencing I would have thought being able to run a SIP client on a PocketPC to connect to a corporate network would have been a cool feature to be able to promote! Considering one of the big features of the new EVDO upgrade is QoS it would be the perfect network to be deploying mobile VoIP or video conferencing solutions over!

Skype and SIP softphones work fine over EV-DO... CDMA 1xRTT has quite high latency though, and once you get up to the 4-500ms level, it will be difficult to hold normal conversations.
