I recommended this phone to a friend for the dedicated GPS function and that it came preloaded with NZ maps as well. She came back to me and was advised by Harvey Norman staff that it doesnt have NZ maps preloaded and that out of the box, it will need to download maps on the go.

I said go back to them and she was asvised by them again, no preloaded nz maps and this was confirmed by a telecom salesperson. I wonder if they were talking strictly about google maps?

According to reviews, the US model has pre-packed Garmin navigator (and uses google streetview and search to show locations while using)

Review

BUT, as with most garmin GPS units you may still have to get online and DL the 30odd mb map pack. Still need to put it online via PC within 60days to get map gaurantee anyway.

Looks like it needs data to DL lots of stuff while using maps anyways.

Just returned some of these for a customer that was experiencing lockups/slow use :D

Plug it in and see if its got the default garmin files onboard. gmapsupp.img is the norm.

The telecom sold devices should definitely come with the New Zealand maps preloaded (for the Garmin navigator).
Google maps is present, but you'll need to update it to get the google turn by turn direction.

If you do buy one, just make sure that you register with GarminAsus as quickly as possible so that you can update to the latest maps.

Thanks for that, I'll confirm with a play myself in the Telecom shop. Even with maps preloaded, it may download update data for points of interest and their locations, which I wouldnt imagine be that much compared to google turn by turn.

Correct, The map is preloaded on the device. It does/can use data for POI's etc. Run Garmin Map program with data disabled on the device and the map software will continue to work.

the lg optimus one p500 comes with N-Drive and NZ maps built in (on the SD card) it also comes with the car cradle too + android 2.2.

Obviously if you've got to be on telecom then it's not the device for you as an 850 version hasn't been released in NZ yet however on VF and 2D it's a good option.

I've had a play with the A10 for a couple of days. Yup it has NZ Maps. The GPS app is excellent - well integrated into the device, you get free updates to maps (at least thats what the mygarmin site said when i updated from 1.6 to 2.1) and also it links into AA Traffic reports automatically. Very handy. Feature wise I find it a lot better than Sygic or tomtom on my iphone. The device itself is fast and responsive - very smooth.

Only downside for me is that its an eclair/2.1 device with no chance of getting an official update to 2.2 (since Garmin-Asus have stepped out of the handset game).
