Hi, can you buy unlocked cell phones from OZ that are also selling here by local distributers, and use them on Telecom, Vodafone, 2 degrees, etc, thanks for any help.

If you want to use on Telecom XT then the best option are the Telstra NextG ones. Others should be ok for the remaining networks.

Most importantly you have to be sure the handsets are unlocked. You will need to manually configure settings to access mobile data and MMS.

Have to know which phone, and which network.

I don't want to sound negative, but if you:

A. Do not have an understanding of the frequencies, differences in handsets, unlocking etc and

B. Are unwilling to google it and find out when all the information you need is available very easily

Then I really think you are the type of consumer who should buy it from a NZ retailer who will be able to tell you for sure where it will work and you have some redress should they give you wrong info.

It is not the case that you can just buy any phone from anywhere and put in any sim and everything will work properly. If you are not willing to put in the leg work to work out what needs to be done, then you will find value in purchasing from somebody who does know.

The easiest way is just to walk into a Telecom store and buy a handset you know will work, without going into unlocking, configuration, etc.

Sometimes network operators lock a phone so that it cannot be used on another operators network. It is designed to stop people buying a phone (possibly cheaply) from one operator and then jumping to another and using the phone there.

If you are asking these questions then you should only buy a phone locally from a dealer so that you know it will work. Unlocking is not something where a network operating will happily hand you over a key to use the phone on anothers network.

All 3 Aussie networks will happily provice unlock codes for their phones - you just have to hand over your credit card number and pay a fee that depends entirely on how the phone was acquired, ie how much of a subsidy it had on it.

Telstra only lock prepaid mobiles and the iPhone.
