For mothers day I bought my wife a Galaxy S to replace her old CDMA fone and installed Skype from the apps store. I have it running on my Voda Galaxy 3 fine but on the Telecom SGS when I log in to Skype it just says "Signing In...." and stays there. Some on both WiFi and 3G.

The only reason I want to try it is that the SGS has a front facing camera and video Skype over WiFi could be interesting

Anyone know if Telecom blocks it??

What version software? I know Skype never used to work on the Galaxy S.

on the market place it clearly states Skype doesn't work on SGS unless it's on 2.2+

Go to the apps store and install Tango. It is free and works great on my GALAXY S I9000. The picture quality is suberp. I would say it is as good as if not better than Skype. There is even a version for Iphones.

Looks like the problem has been solved due to the Android version not being compatible.

Just to answer the question about Telecom blocking Skype, I can confirm they dont. Was using it last night on my X10 (Rooted and upgraded to 2.2) with no issues.

Surely there is a 2.2 upgrade for the SGS available? Rather worrying if not.

It should be out soon, I think it's silly that a high end phone has only got Android 2.1.1 with no updates available atm. You /could/ mod it and install a custom rom like Darkys but then you run into the problems with voiding your warranty.

Just can't win.

Wow that's pathetic. The desire recently got gingerbread, and i'm personally hanging out for android 2.3.4 AOSP and will be all over Android Ice Cream [Sandwich] when that launches.
So lame that decent spec hardware is let down by lame manufacturers and carriers.

If anything happens to mine and i need to make a warranty claim in the few months that it has left on it, unless its hard bricked i can just reflash it back to stock and send it away.

If it's a carrier specific galaxy then I think you are in the boat of having to wait until Telecom signs off on the Froyo(2.2) update. Having said that, Gingerbread is already available for carriers overseas, and the generic rom along with custom roms are available for the international i9000 also.
