Hello,

Does anyone know when Telecom will be updating it's modem/router that it supplies with bundled packages to a newer Wireless-n model? The current Thompson 585 is rather an old model now.

We signed up a couple of months ago and got a Thomson 585 V8 - which is wireless-n

Like anything you get what you pay for, and what can you expect for free?? As stated the thomson's have had wireless n for quite some time but its a rather budget implementation of it. If your after a decent router, then your going to have to poney out some cash. The Thomson's are an average router and the wireless n range is rather lacking. Want a solid performing router with lots of features and enough wifi-N to saturate the neighbourhood then look no further tham the Netgear wndr3400/wndr3700, however it will cost you around $200-$250

I'd prefer a v7 over a v8. The v8 has 65mbps wireless N which is a near useless increase over G. However the v7 appears to have more features in the web interface (eg WDS) and can be loaded with a version of openwrt if you dont need the modem component. Even if you don't use custom firmware it appears the v7 can be at least debranded (from what i hear).

I have a barely used v8 sitting on my desk atm which i have no idea what to do with, looks like selling it might net 30 bucks perhaps.

I dont want to comment on the Thompson per say, but the n standard at any speed has advantages over g thats worth having, that said I cannot comment on Thompsons implementation.

In my personal opinion the Telecom routers (thomson routers) are crap we had 2 and both stuffed out with in 12 months and other people have had lots of problem with them. The old D-Link Routers were much better yea there were still problems but they lasted alot longer.

I don't know when Telecom will change there brand of routers but I hope they do soon it can't look good for them.

Now as I understand, the N protocol doesnt have as much overhead over a b/g system.

Most people dont realise that a 54mbit G connection auctually has half of that data as protocol overhead. So the auctual maximum tcp/ip throughput that you will ever see on a G connection is 25-27mbit/s.

N on the other hand doesnt have all that overhead. So when you see 65mbit N, you are auctually getting around 60mbit/s. A Huge improvment over G of double the speed.

If you are a new customer they give you one for free so might as well take it.... and then put it on a shelf somewhere, sell it on trademe or give it to a relative/friend with a really old crappy ADSL1 Dlink

I have 2 of these v8 Thompson routers and I have found that the biggest weakness on them
is the wireless N which is a very lite version of N, it is very flaky but apparently the latest firmware 8.7.8 I think, fixes this issue, problem is Techincolor do not release firmware to the public and only deal with Telcos they supply. So it is up to Telecom to release an update which they have not. Found a place to download the new firmware but I think Telecom have very much lock up the very lastest v8 ones to stop people updating.

Now didn't they do Video cards way back when, might even be able to scratch one up lol.
