Can someone please tell me if the Galaxy S II that is sold by Telecom NZ is an i9100 that supports 850/900/1900/2100 WCDMA 3G?  Or is the version they sell a different model with only tri-band WCDMA?

If it is the latter, does anyone know if you can load any i9100 custom ROM as long as the modem firmware is kept at one of the versions that supports 850MHz?

Thanks in advance

The 9100T is still quad band UTMS - this is confirmed with mine running on vodafone and showing connected to a WCDMA900mhz site.

You need to keep the same modem version number as lots of people have reported that the T doesn't like the same modem as the international versions and results in poor 3G performance.

How does the phone identify that you're on a 900MHz site? Is it an app?

If you change the ROM just be wary of breaking the phone, there are already a couple of threads on here in the past week from people who have lost 850 coverage with 3rd party ROM's.

That's a problem with the modem Steve. Not normally included in the ROM in this device. Flashed separately.

I assume they flashed an image that included a different version of modem firmware that didn't support 850MHz.  That's why I was asking if I can install a custom ROM as long as I keep an 850MHz compatible modem version.

You can't, but believe me some idiot will use the wrong code press something like delete all and bugger their phone - it's happened before.

As in the modem that comes with the Telecom SGSII. You can check this by going to Settings > About phone and scroll down to Baseband version.

Cheers for that. What sort of speeds do you get using the Speedtest.net app?
