Heads-up to all Telecom Static IP users

We got a letter today from Telecom.

Apparently they had identified our static ip address as 'inactive' and wanted to remove it - there is a an online form that had to be completed by 16 January if we wanted to keep the address.

But the address is far from inactive - its our main buisness gateway.

Their website form isnt the world's best - with many required fields, some of which took some digging to find the data - but its sorted now.

Thing is that I'm on holiday now, until late Jan. If I hadn't come into the office on an off-chance, I wouldn't have seen the letter and our business email and remote services would have been shot down.

Not good Telecom - quite apart from the misidentification, the time frame to respond is way too short at this time of year. I also suspect that this would be the only warning you get

So, all you static ip users - go check your snail mail

Haha lol fail Telecom. If they are running out of addresses start putting the users on carrier NAT.

defnz:

Its a genuine paper snail mail letter - not email

Letter points to webform on telecom.co.nz

Manually entering the address takes you to the form

So unless telecom.co.nz has been hijacked

Besides who else could make a stuff-up like this ?

Mauricio:

Dont see how deploying IP6 would help here

Telecom were proposing to kill our main address

Therefore no DNS entries anywhere worldwide for our gateway

( Actually we do have IP6 already )

Same thing happened to one of my customers.  The letter said the IP address was inactive for over a year but it's the main business IP address.  There's a dozen workstations behind a small business server accessing the internet daily through it.

Big FAIL Telecom.

I would be asking them how they detected that it wasn't being used, as it souhnds like they have faulty systems.

definitely sounds like an inventory system data integrity issue. What I am amazed with is why is no physical check on the
Network is the IP address is active with a DNS reverse lookup as a confirmation before sending the letter.

That was a reference at a previous comment of Telecom doing this because they are/would be running out of IPv4 addresses.

Sounds plausible/inevitable but IPv4 addresses aren't cheap these days and they can't exactly pull them out of thin air... Carrier NAT or IPv6 sounds like the only viable mid-long term solutions.

IPv6 Internet addressing does exist on Telecom network in corporate space.
BB Network is capable, the existing IPv4 static addresses there are still heaps of addresses to spare, not certain on when they will trials with IPv6 on BB but the infrastructure definitely is capable and was tested.

Billing? Remote diagnosis? Call centre tools? Product management?

A bit more than just the pipes...

Yes agree, hence my comments on "no word on Trials", and yes they are far from it until those infrastructure exists in BB.

Well if telecom does happen to get desperate, I have a /22 they can buy off me, for a nice premium of course.
My upstream doesnt seem to be able to get their upstream to get it going...so i have been doing carrier NAT for my customers since i started.
