Bad luck if you're in a contract. Open term? I'd leap to prepaid for the next 5 months.

they make no money from non business phone and broadband ... so for this chunk the idea is bragging rights ... obviously there are way more heads to be won on the prepay front so ... :) muuahahaha

wasn't there a comcom sting in the past with these sort of "anti-competitive" marketing?

There's never any love for on-account customers. This is well known for many years.

So if you are mid month now on the $19 BIG plan - do you automatically get free calling to Telecom mobiles from now?

Hey hang on a second, Telecom released the Open Term plans for pay monthly : http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/mobile/plansandpricing/paymonthly/

Still pretty competitive $29 plan if you have your own phone.

So the Pay Monthly folks aren't completely forgotten...

Does telecom still have the option where you can join an open term plan and then split the cost of the handset up over 12 months on your landline bill? If so that makes it even better on open term.

yes, but you don't even need to be on open term. if you have a landline then you put the handset on there if you want but still be on prepay.

For $35 a month here in AU (open term contract) I get 1.5GB of data, free on-net calling and $550 'credit' to use, which works out to be about 500 minutes to AU numbers, or about 2hrs calling back to NZ (or a mixture of).

I just use my phone for whatever I need to and never have to think about. I rarely get close to using up my allocation.
