Some email providers, such as Orcons iserve hosting service don't provide SMTP servers for domain based email, they require you to use the ISP smtp server. So that isn't an option for those users.

If we are paying for Telecom as an ISP we are should be allowed to use this service. They are already blocking a range of ports that our host uses for SMTP. Which is why we do use SMTP.xtra.co.nz on a range of our machines.

Good idea, but I do know a lot of Telecom broadband customers who rely on smtp.xtra.co.nz to send email out from their "non-xtra" accounts. Those people will need to authorise those accounts by adding them to their Yahoo/Xtra accounts before they can use send.xtra.co.nz SSL/465, a process that Joe Public often has difficulty with.

Sorry I think that this is not a good idea. I NEVER use my Yahoo/Xtra accounts now we have to login to this unsecure accounts and actually use them.

Can anybody from Telecom clarify this? I was about to sign up to a 2 year VDSL contract and if SMTP is not longer a service without jumping through hoops.

If you run your own mail service then run your own smtp server and unblock port 25 and do your own thing. Go to www.telecom.co.nz/port25 and get yourself unblocked. Easy as on adsl, vdsl or ufb if that's what you need.

It's when that port gets block with zero prior notice that frustrates me. We host websites with 10 different companies for various reasons and this creates a HUGE admin headache.

Its just easier to move to another ISP that offers SMTP services for me. Can someone at Telecom Clarify when this is coming into effect so I can be moved before the fact. ?

I think the contact said we are looking to shutdown smtp.xtra.co.nz around the 1st of march but that may get pushed out depending on ongoing usage. There hasn't been zero notice as haven't you just been called about this informing you of this change? There is a non-trivial number of people using the unencrypted SSL server so this is not a simple task matching who is still using them and then somehow contacting them (mostly via outbound calls) so it is not an exercise undertaken lightly.

For some further information how you can setup individual accounts, but it really sounds like you should run your own SMTP Server, and get port 25 unblocked which is a simple exercise.

The value of the email addresses per user must be thousands to Telecom, as it effectively hooks them into keeping Telecom as their ISP.

As a result of these ongoing issues I have witnessed something of a mass exodus away to gmail etc - and all of these users are effectively free agents once they have finished shifting to the new addresses...

If your going to close down the smtp.xtra.co.nz on port 25 on March 01 this is going to cause some problems with PBX systems that do voicemail to email delivery. Most users of this feature are on our small systems do not have internal email servers so rely on hosted or just IPS email and we usually send the emails out via the smtp address with no authentication. With all the crap that has been going on with Yahoo and xtra mail the last thing they will want is to use send.xtra.co.nz with authentication only to find it blocked every week or so. Guess I will get lots of calls from service techs when it gets closed down. I'll just tell them to call Telecom and get them to sort it..

I know there are a LOT of Office Photocopier/Printers that have been setup to scan to email addresses using smtp.xtra.co.nz by their suppliers.

Probably well over 50% of businesses have been Telecom broadband customers for many years. One hell of a lot of businesses will be affected by this. Most of these machines will be able to be reprogrammed to use send.xtra.co.nz SSL/465 but some older ones may not. Many won't do anything until it just stops working.

I see a sh*t storm coming, if this isn't phased in over a longer period. Look what happened when LogMeIn recently shifted the goal posts with 7 days notice.

I think I'll just tell the service techs to setup a Gmail account and use that. It works quite well..

Unless your copier is so old that it doesn't do ssl which is needed for Gmail as well.

No, doesn't at all look like phishing.. (its not!) really...

One would have thought an email containing the information on the page itself, and a recommendation to visit the telecom page to be prompted with a 'got an email about changes? click here!" may have been better? Rather than an embedded link which many may be very suspect of after the previous bombardments.

Even I did the usual fake embedded URL check.
