are you on VFAU? when i was on VFAU in central melbourne my average 3g speed was ... wait of it ... 200kbps (range 15 - 1500 kbps ... outside of melbourne can get 4000kbps) ... i could never use a third of the data however hard i tried ... on telecom in the middle of nowhere ... 7000kbps!

yes, but you don't even need to be on open term. if you have a landline then you put the handset on there if you want but still be on prepay.

Nice. I imagine this isn't that well known. No extra fees right? Far better than going on a contract or financing a device.

yes, but you don't even need to be on open term. if you have a landline then you put the handset on there if you want but still be on prepay.

What you would need to do is setup an "Smart One Bill" account which is a postpaid but zero monthly cost account (not prepaid) and you can do deferred payment on a handset over 12 months with that account. It's in fact what I am doing paying off my wife's iPhone using exactly that deferred payment and her phone number is on a different account type.

The problem with number potability how do you know the number your calling is actually on Telecom?? That's why i don't like these sort of plans..

I am. But they have spent a lot of money on infrastructure recently (as the result of a lot of bad press), and lost a lot of customers.

So an upgraded network with less customer and better value FTW.

My VFAU connection is far more reliable than the Telstra connection I also have.

The problem with number potability how do you know the number your calling is actually on Telecom?? That's why i don't like these sort of plans..

The majority of most people’s calls go to just a few numbers – usually mother, father, partner, son, daughter etc. For many of those, you will be well aware of which network they are on, or it will be very easy to check.

For calls to other numbers that aren’t close rellys, just imagine you have a (roughly) 40% chance of it being a telecom mobile and so free. For the other 60%, the minutes wil come of your normal bucket of 60 mins.

I gave it a +6422 number as well for that one, and it handled it fine, since all numbers on my phone have the country code prefix. And with spaces too, since jellybean seems to like putting spaces in numbers.

That's their problem then.

Of any friends or family i contact on a regular basis i know what network they're on, and for most of them what plan too. I know most won't remember this but as mentioned above, for the people you're going to call the most, it will probably only be a select few and quite simple to remember if they are on telecom or not. You could even convert them over to take advantage of it also

Or also as mentioned, you can just go with chance and assume a percentage of your calls are going to be to people on telecom.

Telecom is helping Kiwis to stay in touch this Christmas and over the summer break by making its $19 Big Value Prepaid Pack – currently New Zealand’s best value mobile prepaid pack - even better.From today all customers using the $19 pack will be able to call and text other Telecom mobiles for free up until 31 March 2013, provided they have enough credit on their phone to keep renewing the pack each month. This comes in addition to the 60 national minutes (to any network), 5000 person-to-person texts and 500mb of data already included in Telecom’s $19 Big Value Prepaid Pack.

Telecom’s Chief Marketing Officer Jason Paris said “we all know that the Christmas and summer break is far better when you can share it with family and friends, and so Telecom wants to give Kiwis another way to connect with those loved ones who don’t happen to be in the same town – without breaking already stretched Christmas budgets.

“What better way to do this than by making sure that Telecom mobile customers can call and text each other for free? We’re encouraging Kiwis to come and join us this summer. It’s easy to change mobile phone network, we can sort it for you – and we’re not fussy, you can bring your existing mobile number with you!”

People who are unsure of whether their friends or family members are Telecom customers can find out simply by texting their mobile number to 300.

The deal will be rolled out automatically to the more than 100,000 Telecom mobile customers who have already purchased the $19 pack. New customers eager to get free calling and texts to their friends and family who are on Telecom mobiles have up until 31 January 2013 to sign up. Might get my dad to change over.

This de-values his $40 smartphone plan even more. Even tho he has 250 odd minutes on that plan now, most of the people he contacts are on XT, so it would likely be the best option for him and have him $21 a month.
