i used the method above, 2talk works with skinny modem now, i can make and receive calls, great.

but italk (slingshot) can also make and receive calls with skinny modem, but there is no sound, can't hear anything . this is even more strange. it shouldn't be happening. but its no big deal, as long as 2talk works, thats the main thing. but I'm just wondering why there is no sound on iTalk. maybe slingshot blocks it. lol. I'm having a lot of problem with this skinny modem lol. iTalk works on slingshot modem, telecom modem, not on skinny modem. I'm just not feeling good, thats all, because i want something to work perfectly the way it should work.. if something doesn't work well, i feel sad and want it fixed. and thats me.

The issue is not with the Skinny modem, it is due to Skinny using CG-NAT.

No option around that other than for VoIP using a provider e.g. 2talk / WxC that handles NAT transversal better.

As for other stuff e.g. un-blockers / gaming - mixed success and if you want any kind of port forwarding - not an option. Similar if you picked a low cost fixed line provider such as Flip you'd have same issues with CG-NAT with them too.

Hi All,

My first post to this forum.

I have been trialling VoIP on Skinny Broadband for a week now. The problem I have observed is occassional disconnects for incoming calls (sometimes it will be up for a day, sometimes it down in an hour). The ATA stays registered and can make outgoing calls but incoming calls fail. Rebooting the ATA does not fix the issue (it registers fine) and makes outgoing calls in both directions. Whilst in this mode I have experimented with placing the ATA in a DMZ and disabling the SIP ALG to see if it will receive the incoming call, which it does. But then I cannot establish an outgoing RTP audio. I also tried STUN with various settings with no success (with SIP AGL off, to try and eliminate the SIP AGL from my system). Rebooting the router or registering another ATA fixed the issue, so I assume the SIP AGL is not updating itself (Syslog shows no incoming SIP). Unfortunately, at least in my case to date, I cannot get VoIP working in both directions without SIP AGL. I have another much better 4G router that I used with a Skinny Mobile SIM in for testing and I had no troubles using this (with port forwarding enabled for testing), so I can only assume the Huawei router does not handle port forwarding (DMZ) as expected.

In my opinion the Huawei B315 router router functions are not well implemented (e.g. port forwarding, no DHCP table, cannot be configured as a bridge-you can use DMZ but it's not identical etc) and quite restrictive (e.g. cannot specify ranges for example. I did try configuring them but was not sucessful in getting the ATA to work in both directions (yes I know it is behind CGNAT). I have configured a Huawei VDSL router and whilst basic, it works the way one would expect in terms of port forwarding etc. So I find the B315 quite disappointing in that regard. On the positive side they have at least implemmented GB ports and it supports LTE cat 4.

I would be interested to hear if other fellow customers ATA’s are able to receive incoming calls long term (without router reboots etc).

Try disabling the STUN on your ATA's and make sure you are using different ports with SIP AGL enabled. Check that you have "register" enabled. I have successfully registed two ATA's on different ports using 5060 and 5061. However I currently only have one registered and have issues as per above post with incomming calls.

This weekend I took the modem to Whitiby and even with two bars only still got 40/10 - miles ahead of their currentl ADSL2 of 4/1. we then continued to Martinborough where we stayed on a B&B, just three blocks from the square. Vodafone had 3G coverage only, with no mobile data most of the times. The Skinny modem had three bars and showed 40/25 there.

And no, Vodafone didn't have problems with overloading. The town was empty, Wellington anniversary holiday, with most shops closed.

harrylin: I'm still undecided. Don't know if I want to keep the skinny modem or not, Its got CG NAT. Does anybody know if 2degrees broadband use CG NAT as well or not?

2degree fixed line won't be using CG-NAT as far as I know, but 2degree mobile data by default will use CG-NAT. They may have a direct APN for mobile data with public IP, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

What issues are you having with CG-NAT?

I'd just like to point out that as @freitasm was testing a modem we supplied we were OK for it to be moved around to different locations and put a check in place to make sure it was excluded from our normal process.  Normally the modem can only be used in one home location.
