Check Skinny's coverage map

https://www.skinny.co.nz/coverage/

Skinny's address checker will only give a "Success" result for a property with postal delivery - check the status of your property with NZPost's tool.

https://www.nzpost.co.nz/tools/address-postcode-finder

If your property doesn't have postal delivery, try to find a nearby address that does, then check that in Skinny's tool.

I had to resort to buying a Skinny sim to prove that I had 4G coverage (the map says zero coverage) and then getting help from LivingSkinny

My address shows the best signal possible on Skinny's own map.  But I have phoned them and they tell me regardless of the map, they will not help me.  My address is also showing the best signal on the Spark map.  Skinny are telling me, despite a "best" rating on all the maps that I am not in their coverage area.

I have tried various addresses that show good coverage on the map in various rural addresses in Whangarei - none are serviced.  Therefore, the only conclusion I can come to is that Skinny are not interested in rural customers.  I am less than 15 minutes from the CBD for goodness sake.  I feel pretty marginalised as a rural customer.  We truly are second class digital citizens.

I have to say, I feel pretty pissed off by their attitude.

Bill.

Perhaps the nearest cellsite to your location has not had capacity upgrades. Spark upgrade there cellsites on a regular basis.

As advised by Paul (living skinny) I ordered mine using the address check of a neighbour and then just changing the delivery address to my own. I'm quite a borderline case, on 1 bar reception, but still get a decent 15mb/s download, though the 0.5mb/s upload is a pain when uploading pics in whatsapp etc!

Still, order the modem on a trial and see if it pans out for you with a 100% guarantee of return of all your money, INCLUDING the data cost. Can't get a better trial deal than that!

When I spoke to the person at Skinny, they said I would need to use another address near me.  I have checked multiple valid addresses, but only the ones in or very near the CBD work.  Basically, Skinny are deliberately excluding all rural addresses in Whangarei regardless of coverage.

My address is fine on the NZ Post site.  Basically the communication industry in NZ treats its rural users like crap.  I understand when there is no service available.  But to have the best level of service available and be told to piss off is upsetting and disappointing.

it is not about being rural at all im rural and i can get it according to their site in fact i think this is one of the main focuses with this product being rural broadband

i believe it is more to do with the capacity of the towers not all towers have enough spare to make it a good idea to use them for this service etc

Highly unlikely.  It's a low population area and 4G 700 MHz has only been around for a few short months.  Besides, Spark tell me I can get 4G.  Problem is, I need/want a prepay contract as we're putting our house on the market and can't live with a fixed-term contract.  Skinny is my only real (non) option.

So pick an address that is accepted and would hang off the same tower you want to use, order the trial using that address and change the delivery to yours.

Try the product and if they CAN somehow triangulate you or it just "doesn't work" return the modem within 30 days get your full rebate, and know you tried?

If it does work... Well, problem solved?

What general area are you in?  Rural Auckland?

I have checked many rural addresses around Whangarei, and Skinny offers nothing outside of the CBD that I can find.  I just don't buy that every single tower in Rural Whangarei (or Northland for that matter) is over subscribed.

Let me spell out what I've been saying for the last several posts: I CANT FIND A SINGLE RURAL ADDRESS IN WHANGAREI THAT SKINNY SERVICES!!!  Sorry for shouting, but this means I cannot do what you suggest.  Skinny may service rural Auckland/Wellington, but I can't find anywhere in Northland unless it's right in the city.  I would love it if someone from Skinny would tell me why this is, when the maps show the best level of signal.  They certainly won't tell me over the phone.

OK, I have now tried a multitude of addresses around Whangarei and Northland and I think I can say with absolute certainly that Skinny only services the CBD in Whangarei - nowhere else in the whole of Northland that has great 4G coverage.  I guess I'm screwed.

Doesn't Spark offer an open term option? You'd have to pay for the modem just like with Skinny but can cancel anytime.. seems to fit what you need?

Cheers mate, I just gave them a call. $250 for the modem and then $96 per month for 80 GB with no carry over.  Quite a lot more than Skinny, when you consider their modem is $144 when you allow for the free $55 credit on the first lot of data.  Skinny's plan really does suit me much better and would save me a lot over time, but I guess I have no choice. frown

So try a non rural address (McD or something) and have them post it to your own address, try it out, tell them you're "changing address" and continue.

Instead of saying they won't.. MAKE THE CALL and then SEE if they won't when it's already working for you.

Careful there. Recommending someone to gamble with their time and money... I can see things not working well and people complaining about the telco, which didn't want to sell it in first place.

So my modem arrived today speed is good at 50mbit down and 25 up a hell of a lot better then my 2 down and 0.5 up dsl

ping is not as good as the dsl line but that is to be expected 60-80ms to aus servers compared to 30-40 on the dsl line but worth it i think CSGO seemed to work ok

on a side note i must try to not use speedtest.net so much with such a small data cap and a decent speed it really eats it using something near 100MB to do a speedtest
