From what I've read, shaping occurs between 9am and 2am no matter what, which if I'm not mistaken is NOT said in the plan's details:

"When the network is busy (generally inside the hours of 9am and 2am) you may notice reduced speeds"

Notice "busy" and "may". Not "will definitely be shaped between 9am and 2am". I.e. it implies that shaping ONLY occurs when there is real congestion. Is it different somewhere else? I smell the Commerce Commission...

Also, what happened to "Shaping only peak times from 3pm through 10pm", which is what Mauricio said on page 2...

so what we are seeing here is just a repeat of the xnet torrent plan coz thats what it sounds like to me, and if so speeds are only going to get worse based on my xnet experiences,

my speeds are terrible already, less than dial up for international sites, it is far slower than what I usually get and so I am moving back to the 40gb plan

I've been on BT for 2 days, pretty happy with it, sync rate of just under 7MBits, YouTube buffers at sync rate, and speeds to LA seem fine...I just came from XNET and it's a marked difference in my opinion in Telecom's favour, but time will really tell.

Unlimited plans inherently attract the type of people who run bit torrent 24x7, you will probably find the bandwidth pool is completely consumed constantly - so in effect it's always busy.

Not always true... with good management policy while subscribing users to the plan (limit the number of people on the plan) and there will be enought bw for every user on the plan. that's what SNAP did I guess :) and I was very happy for 14 months on their unlimited plan. NO a singl major issue during the 14 months period.

If Telecom have something similar - I'll be very happy :)

Yeah, I don't think Telecom are going to limit the amount of people on Big Time, but they do have one advantage over Snap, the own the Southern Cross Cable, well a lot of it anyways, so they have all the bandwidth they need, it's just a matter of them allocating it.

I think with deep queueing, lots of caching, and a good traffic management the plan will be very usable.

I'm now watching YouTube in HD and a 5 minute movie comes down in around 2 minutes. Gotta love that local cache.

Now the big question is, do they have P2P caching???

Hmmmm, the caching for me is not working.
I've got a great connection for speed, but for some reason YouTube totally sucks.
I've got to pause every video and wait for it to download. On Go Large I didn't have to do that.

Not all movies are cached, only the popular ones. If a movie isn't in the cache, it gets streamed to your PC via the cache at normal download speeds, but the next person watching the movie get's it full speed.

Try this video, I'm watching it in HQ and it's coming down for me at around 500-600KB/s (in Task Manager), twice as fast as what I'm watching it. Let me know your results

Nup, no go on that one either, stopped after 2 seconds to buffer.
I was trying http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo
Heres a speed test to my closest test site.
Speed test in CH
And also to Auckland
AK speed test
So speed doesn't seem to be the issue here by the looks of it.

And to top it all off, youtube IS coming from local cache.
v4.lscache1.googlevideo.com on my machine resolves to 210.55.180.153 which is a Telecom IP.
Weird it's taking so long for local cached stuff to come through.

AFAIK Telecom caching hasn't been fully launched?

Perhaps NealR would like to confirm?

Speculating unofficially it seems the  caching server(s) are on the global gateway network, which means they are possibly on the wrong side of the traffic management appliances/servers or not excluded from the peak time http shaping.

If so, that's a hilarious network planning fail.

Burwood Exchange, Cabinet BUR/04 still to go live roughly in October this year. (They have been doing the work this week gone, I'm roughly 100 meters from the cabinet)
