Jama: ...Hmmm what a difficult decision.

Nice of you not to choose the cheapest US GSM roaming network for the comparison Jama...

Sorry about that I took the first network with the best coverage (AT&T) to compare with the CDMA carrier with the best coverage (Verizon). The irony being that Verizon are 25% owned by Voda and are cheaper to roam to for CDMA than the cheapest GSM roaming partner.

Jama: I need to think about this... If I was traveling to the UK would I rather roam on Voda and pay:
$1.20 peak and .50 off-peak calls within UK
$3.90 peak and $2.85 off-peak to call NZ
.50 cent surcharge on text messages

OR

On the Telecom world phone pay:
.40 cents within UK
.92 cents to call NZ
.43 cents to send a Text message

And to think the Voda 'mother ship' is based in the UK.....

Then (of course) I fly the USA flip into CDMA mode and pay:
$1.27 within US
$1.93 to call NZ
$2.20 to receive calls in the US
.20 cents to send a text message

But if I was on Voda I would pay...
$2.50 within USA
$5.50 to call NZ
$2.50 surcharge to receive calls
.80 cent surcharge on text messages

...Hmmm what a difficult decision.

If I want to call you while you're away it almost always costs me more to call your O2 number than your 027 number.

If I wanted to roam with a foreign SIM & number I'd just buy my own UK SIM card and pay even less than the roaming rates Telecom are charging for the same connection.

Telecom's roaming is nothing but a kludge. You cannot deny that.

It's still in it's infancy. Remember telecom were a bit stuck for choice at the time of the EOL for 025... Either go GSM at a frequency they did not have or utilise the existing network and bands of 025, CDMAOne was a logical choice.

This cuts out the "courier out a loan-phone" hassle of the previous system and will prove very useful in time to come, The Telecom roaming rates are surprisingly competitive, especially when Vodafone is so global.

I wonder if a normal UK based o2 sim would work in the phone though?? hmmm that's a thought.

Vodafone's roaming prices are still a joke and Passport Roaming is a year overdue because the dinosaur of a billing system they had couldn't support it. From what I've heard it's launching once the new billing system is live for on account so should hopefully make things a bit better.
