I dug out my old faithful DLink DSL-500 and got a G.DMT (ADSL1) 6Mbit link to see if a different connection type changed the profile at all, same pattern just with slower peaks, I expected as much but thought it was worth a try.

This server http://zeus.jetstream.co.nz/ should still be well connected to the Telecom core and should be good for ruling out the modem, your network and backhaul as issues:

Rather than the speed test which is over too fast there is a 450MB test file:

I get near a flat graph when downloading this (single http thread).

What if you try a download test from a https source, to see if its the proxy farm causing your issues

Don't think domestic goes through the cache/proxy so the zeus link above should be a good test for that too.

Yep... It's directly on the core so would rule out any DSL or backhaul issues.

If it goes without an issue against speedtest.telecom.co.nz then it may be the proxy farm or something upstream from Telecom. If it still runs slowly then it's your DSL connection.

Interesting, that 450MB file with a single thread just downloaded nicely at steady 1.9MB/s.

Thanks Duane - that's really useful info and I have passed it on. The occasional glitch is expected and is probably TCP backing off as the result of a dropped packet. With a remote end SO close though, the rate climbs up again almost instantly.

Just for the sake of completeness I ran it a few more times, except for the occasional trival (to be expected) glitch it it was quite consistant.

Left block is six threads, right block single thread again, both looking good to me.

I'm sorry if I'm totally off base here because I really don't understand what you guys are discussing but I did catch the part about multi-threaded downloads. For about the last 10 days when I try to download files from Real-Debrid the download manager can not split the file to accelerate the download(Internet Download Manager starts the first part but then fails to connect properly to keep splitting the download). I'm slowly working through a process of elimination to pinpoint the problem(at this stage it's looking like Xtra or my connection). Anyway does this sound like it could be related to what you're discussing?

Sounds like a different problem, try https instead of http.

Linux mirrors aren't a bad option for these sorts of tests, eg:

There's several visible glitches there that appear evenly spaced in time - are they at the same intervals as you were seeing before, but just ramping back up very quickly?

All three of those gave the stepped pattern, the 1st two maxing out the line for the usual 20s then dropping to 40Kb/s to 200Kb/s subject to threads, and the third one much slower but same pattern.
