As requested bove you might want to do an isolation test. Start by removing all phones, faxes, alarms from your line. Then plug the modem directly to the line without a filter. See how it performs and post any updated stats.

Let us know of any filters you have on the line, how many points, how many phones, etc.

Spykerwolf: Thanks GregV. I checked the thread and called them, but unfortunately they don't support it anymore - apparently because Telecom don't offer those routers anymore. He said we're also not getting the full speed on their end. The guy suggested I upgrade the router, but I actually just want to see what happens when upgrading the firmware. Is there any other way to get the latest firmware?

Yeah that line rate looks suspiciously like modem compatibility with the newer line cards Chorus use.

DLink's download site for AU/NZ is:

Select DSL, then 504T, expand downloads, NZ downloads then follow their instructions to download the right revision.

Also if you expand firmware upgrade there are also some other instructions for upgrading the firmware.

Thought it might have been a bug in the firmware, so I decided to download a firmware upgrade from D-Link, but while it was busy running - it crashed with an error message - Script Error: EAccessViolation.
Searched online and they said it might be a firewall issue, or most likely Windows 7 (XP recommended).
I disabled Avast and disabled Windows Firewall (it was already turned off).

I'm going to try and install XP today and see if it works then.
Fingers crossed.

Spoke to Telecom yesterday though, and they said that they can also see that we're not getting max speed. We're getting 50% or less of the actual amount - he thought it was a firmware issue (router issue actually) and wanted to offer me a Technicolor router.

Will post back soon.

504T's are so old, now. Why not take the offer of a new ADSL2+ modem? Some things are just not worth wasting time on.

Yeah not even sure if the last firmware will fix the DLink tbh, it's old as the hills but it's worth a try.

The Telecom supplied Technicolor/Thomson's aren't bad, they will probably offer you one for free if you're willing to go on 12 month contract.

Ok guys so I ended up getting the Technicolor router and it's a little bit better now:

Downloading is about 1MB now (compared to 750kB), but I still think it can be faster.

There are 8 bits in a byte, network connection speeds are usually specified in Megabits, browser download speeds are often shown in KB (Kilobytes) or MB (Megabytes).

The downstream rate in your modem is ~12Mbit/s which is ~1.5 Megabyte/s.

Basically 1 MB/s downloads are fine for your line rate, there is some overheard for the protocols used tcp/ip, pppoa etc

However your 12Mbit line rate looks a a bit low for 15.5 line attenuation, suspect internal wiring is bringing that down. How many phone jacks in your place? Are they daisy chained off each other?

Master filter/splitter install could eek out a few more Mbit on the modem connection rate.

Thanks for your reply Ragnor. When you say the master filter/splitter will help out a bit, how much are we talking about?? I'll need to take a look first - will get back on that one. Do you know the average for a 15.5 line attenuation?? Anyway to find out? Internal wiring issues, would that be issues on the telephone line?

I would expect around 17-18Mbit line rate on 15.5 line attenuation, can't guarantee it though too many factors.

Well basically in my room we have:
- Technicolor Router (wireless enabled) (I'm connected wired though).
- Splitter/Filter that leads into the wall (i'm unsure where it leads to).
- My PC is located in this room with the router.

Upstairs we have a landline and it's connected to a splitter/filter there (I think 1, or maybe 2).
We also have Sky TV upstairs which is connected to a splittler/filter as well.

I think that's about it, don't think I missed anything.
How would I do an isolation test?
We also have an alarm, but unsure where that leads to...

Basic isolation test
Unplug everything from all the phone sockets and plug in the modem nearest where the line comes into the house and check the line rate in the modem.

More extreme isolation test
Find the ETP (little box where the phone line joins the house wiring) open it up, disconnect the house wiring from the incoming line, chop the end of a spare modem to phone socket cable and temporarily wire the modem up direct to the line.
