AndrewMac: If data is barred on the network side, it would just be delayed updating on the web portal side. I saw your data was reset in the first post, do you mean the phone was restored to factory settings? If not, that's worth trying

sbiddle: It's interesting you should mention Gmail. On my Android I had my Gmail account configured using an Activesync account and the built in email app because this offers far better functionality over the Gmail app.
Last week I had to disable this after finding my phone was literally flat by 2pm due to excessive data (phone was near constantly showing H+) and battery consumption which I tracked down to the Activesync application. Deleting the Gmail account has solved this. I didn't actually look at my data consumption but it seems that I've possibly had an issue that could be similair
