Finch: Just out of curiosity, does anybody know why this could of happened all of a sudden? My net was fine up until 2 days ago when that Telecom glitch hit. Could it be that that has something to do with it, or because my modem is 6+ years old maybe it is on its way out??

I have noticed that when I download something through torrent, my net doesnt drop. But if I download something the normal way or just browse web pages that is when my connection will drop.

As I said before I am fairly confident that your modem is on the way out. Those modems weren't the most reliable at the best of time 6 years ago. The fact you got 6+ trouble free from the sounds of it somewhat suprises me. Considering (again a guess) it was on 24/7 since you first plugged it in. That's quite impressive IMHO.

If you upgraded to a ADSL2 you would probably double your line speed (not that I'm sure what your line speed is).

To be honest I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time trying to debug an old modem, first I would get a new one, then do the isolation tests and perhaps look at getting a Master Filter installed.

If you go to Chorus Sat and plug in your address. Then "Show VDSL2 cabinets / areas" If your house is within the green area, you should at least be getting ~16MB which would be roughly double what you're getting right now on ADSL1.

My house is 3 houses away from being in the green area lol. however I am in the zone for ADSL2+ yes, just not VDSL2

I am in Foxton and today the broadband is at a very poor speed. Much buffering, pages loading a bit at a time ... everything in slow motion.

At the edge of VDSL coverage you should be getting at least 16MB (as I am about 600meters outside VDSL coverage and get ~14). You will notice a sigificant jump with a ADSL2+ modem. 'Nuff said really.

Sigh. Woke up this morning full of optimism because last night it was going great, however back to disconnecting all the time. I will definitley be buying a new modem/router now and seeing what happens. Maybe my modem is just on the way out. Hope its nothing more serious

Well I am back to normal today, however when I did try to check my broadband usage there was a "closed due to maintainence" sign, this being this morning. Chers.

It seems to be the time of year for outages for me. I can remember it happening this time of year last year as well.

Often get this screen popping up -

Then I shut down the computer, unplug all the phone lines, turn off the modem and plug em back in.
Can be frustrating.

I assume you have already rung the helpdesk and got them to run a line test across you line for a 7 day period?

They should be able to see if there are any patterns as to why it's occurring. It certainly shouldn't be a frequent or annual occurrence.

Its an old one, got it years ago when I first joined Telecom and their Jetstream lol. D-link 302-G and my wireless router is Dir-300.

UGH! Those modems must be 6+ years old and only ADSL1!! If you ring 123 and agree to sign up to a 12 month plan contract (but you can change plans, it's just to stick with Telecom for 12 months) they will normally send one out for free.
