kiwigeek1: yeh imap never seemed to work for me either..but cant see why pop password would work over imap though
with pop peeper dont really need imap but it can do most email systems its a great free tool for windows xp.7 to scan your emails and alert you in nice way which have content

anyhow just updated avast engine and rebooted win 7 32bit and still login id error for pop.. so I have to stick with web email for now but I mess more with it tomorrow give it a day maybe sort itself out

Official IMAP support hasn't been around that long.
I've been using it very successfully for about the past six months or so.

UPDATE

still happening after 3 days now.

and yes I have imap setup to check spam folder with pop peeper (makes it easy to know
if some friends end up in it wrongly) and that also has the password (auth) error
same as the pop3 account

note you can now also in pop3 options to include spam in the inbox with keyword or no keyword
leading it
as someone said about spam checking with Imap before.. theres now several ways to do it with pop
and imap

BUT AS BEFORE IF I LOGIN VIA WEB BROWSER pop3 an imap start working and lasts
for about 5min before I get

sounds like you are pop blocked. Pop block is normally reset automatically once you log into yahoo webmail....hence after that it works.

The problem might not actually be the computer, email client, or its settings.
Pop block is normally from SOME OTHER DEVICE (server, tablet, smartphone or sometimes a computer/laptop) sending the old/wrong password to yahoo too many times.

No only this laptop is accessing it

no other device.. thats why I said I suspect some brute force or new type attacking happening

the software hasnt changed either..

however the security logins on web mail says all accesses via new zealand but I dont see it logging
the pop3 accesses unless its delayed

one thing I have notice since yesterday is the webmail interface has changed I see telecom
logo and the username /account settings that were on the left top and now on the right

so someone updating the system and maybe changed something on my account?

Have you tried taking avast out of the equation?

Have you tried with another regular email client such as thunderbird?

I would imagine if the problem was at Yahoos end then there'd be more than just you reporting the issue.

With the Xtra/Yahoo accounts is it possible to use the regular yahoo pop server - pop.mail.yahoo.com / pop.mail.yahoo.com.au?

yes tried disabling protection and live mail pop peeper all the same

they work for a little while and then 5min later auth error

if it was security I say it never work at all :)

I put a email in to xtra about it instead they can look up whats happening their end perhaps.
when they read their emails :) been 1 hour now

still having the issue.. tried changing check time to 15minute minimum interval made no difference
at the moment Ive configure pop peeper webmail checker to access the inbox which seems to work
well but its sometimes has a problem and lots slower but its a temp workaround for now
it can even send email via the plugin to the webmail.. I guess it simulates form posting and scrapes
the inbox.

I did a search on google and found some people reporting the same issue for their yahoo plus
so maybe its a bigger problem after all.. I read tech reported a problem with their auth server
on one of the comments but these are mostly apple users here but some on other google searches using outlook 2010
so they are windows based.

You mentioned a spam checker earlier, is it possible this or some 3rd party service is triggering the pop block?

no spam checker??? not sure what mean.. yahoo was hacked and used for spam in feb.. since they working on patching it
theres something odd going on with certain accounts not being auth-ed on their auth server

might be time to dump yahoo and completely though

had enough with it going wrong now

I had thought I pinned the problem but alas no

.. seems I had to flush my dns server cache and force xtra.co.nz looks ups to local isp dns instead

seems pop3.xtra.co.nz resolves to
au-pop-tnz-new.mail.gm0.yahoodns.net [124.108.96.66]

and mine was returning singapore instead.. so I thought with new security
adjustments since the spam attack they made it was locking the pop3 up somehow although it would work for 5minutes which was making a bigger mystery

so I guess since was calling wrong yahoo server theres some other security rebot locks account for pop?

which is a non NZ address or is there a new xtra one I dont know about?

Could it be that whoever hacked you in Feb is also (trying to ) POP your mail and the old PW they're repeatedly using is causing the POP blocks? The trouble with the yahoo login history page is it only shows login details for browser logins and yahoo mobile - no POP activity. I POP both my yahoo and xtra accounts to both outlook and thunderbird and this activity never shows up in the login history.

Gmail shows POP and SMTP activity (complete with IP address so you can be sure it is you doing the POPing!) as well as browser activity. I wish yahoo would implement the same, and also provide an option to DISABLE POP. In yahoo mail options once you have ticked "enable POP" the only way to DISable it is to click on the forward option instead, which is a pain if you don't want to forward your mail but simply want to prevent it from being POPed by anyone (yourself or a hacker).

I was never hacked in Feb. Im talking about the ongoing and mass attack that happened

I heard from telecom help but not much help as expected but I guess I could delete my xtra sub account and remake it seems a drastic thing to do though. but if some bot is hacking
via pop3 on my account then it will lock of course yet again unless I use
a completely new username that no friends know which would be annoying

As you have mentioned that you can log into www.xtramail.co.nz ,which means that your username and password is correct .

No I didnt change a thing before problem happened.. since though I have upgraded avast and check all other
settings

I do have gmail account though as needed it for buying via android market and to add on tablet and phone
but never really wanted to use it when xtra account people knew already

so I could make a new sub account or use gmail instead but thats not the point

remember since it was happening to dads email for a few days a week ago
and
the problem went away makes me feel its a yahoo problem as I
reported in above link doing a google search

so how come when you ask for help on telecom its always a cut and paste from an indian?
