tardtasticx: I was always on the understanding that telecom was already charging you for using your credit card? Whenever I went to pay my mobile bill in the past they said there was a 3% surchage for using credit cards so I always went to the post shop or done it via online banking.

Or is this increasing that fee?

http://help.telecom.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/188/~/paying-your-telecom-bill

Click Payment Options > One-Off Credit/Debit-Card and it lists the % that you pay for each credit card type (Visa/MasterCard 3%, AMEX 2% etc)

I remember there being some convince fee for paying by credit card for quite a few years now. So whats changed they charging you in the shop for putting your new phone on the credit card too?

They don't charge for topping up prepaid yet so maybe its that?

Dion

It's interesting that Amex and Diners are cheaper. One of the reasons I thought that shops would not take Amex and Diners was that their fees were higher tha Visa and Mastercard..

rugrat:

I just competely disagree with companys charging for credit cards and refuse to shop with any that do.

A $70 bill and they can't absorb a dollar of charges to know that they'll be paid on time, no debt collection. And managing fees? Only time i conntact them is when credit card exoires, other then that it's all automated.
Need bill on paper to take to nz post, i walk past there once a month so no big deal paying that way.

It wil be interesting, as here in christchurch from memory pak and save tried to charge for credit cards, countdown didn't, end result pak and save had to back down as they lost to many customers.

I quit one power company cause they were charging credit card fees, to one that wasn't, and to top it off the company i switched to is a lower monthly fee.

I used to pay my Telecom bill every month at the post shop and never had the bill. As long as you have your account number they will accept payment.

I'm sure Telecom used to charge a CC surcharge if you paid by phone. I remember years ago trying to pay my Telecom account using the automated phone system and being advised of a 3% surcharge for using CC.

Another user mentioned that NL and HN don't charge a CC surcharge. This seems to be changing. I went into NL last week to buy a few items (several grand worth) and was advised there would be a 2% surcharge for CC's. I was using a work related discount though so I'm not sure if this was due to the discount or will soon be the norm in NL.

From memory the "convenience fee" was for one off credit card payments. If you set up direct debit with your credit card then there was no convenience fee. So I think it is a new charge.

Well I'm paying $140+ a month, and like another user said, surely they can afford to absorb the fees.

But what's odd, is that they're doing this for Debit Cards as well, now I thought debit cards didn't have the Visa and MasterCard transaction fees because they weren't using the credit facility?

I always thought that they still have CC fees, hence why banks are so keen on them - they get the fee without any of the complication of providing credit

if you use them at an eftpos terminal they work just like a normal EFTPOS card, its only if you buy something online or at a vending machine that only takes visa that its no longer an eftpos card.

Depends what account button you push - if you push the credit button on an eftpos terminal, it will be treated just like a credit card (as far as the retailer is concerned)

They work both ways depending on the merchant. This is why so many people are seeing Debit cards failing with Paypass & Paywave transactions which is discussed indepth in another thread.

I brought a big item from nl on friday. Just looked through reciept, no charge for credit card, and I got a discount and free delivery.

If you pay your registration online by cc on landtransports web site they give you a about a $3 discount, compared to paying cash at nz post, so the credit card fee, and discount they give customer must work out cheaper then nz posts charges for handling transcation.

Will pay cash at post office, and while my individual action will have no effect on telecom, if enough people do it, it will hurt and hopefully cause a back down. If not will change to an isp that is happy to take my money, without charging me for the "conveience" of the payment method.

I have tried paying in the past with a printed bill, and since my inkjet was half blocked and there were lines on the barcode it wouldnt scan and they basically refused to take my money.

They pay more of a % for a post shop payment than a credit card so its strange that postshop and posted bill remains free. Im off telecom now since their whole billing system is retarded and it would take a hell of a lot to get me back with them and their arcane practices and systems.

Why single out credit card payments at the same time fuel card users can get a discount on their Telecom bill?

Card Plus

"We had a good chat to our friends at Telecom and they agreed that if our customers paid their monthly Telecom account through Cardplus, we could give them a 3% discount! Includes connection, landline, mobile & internet.
The only cost is a $2 per month admin fee (please note if you have a Cardplus Fuelcard there is NO Telecom monthly admin fee)."

I am pretty sure as a farmlands member I get a discount on my telecom bill, by paying through farmlands.

mattwnz: Just reading the online news and found out about this, which I wasn't aware of before

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/money/8766549/Telecom-adds-surcharge-to-credit-card-bill-payments

Not aware of any other providers doing this yet, although my old ISP used to offer a discount if paying direct debit over credit card.

I pay by farmlands, so presume it will not be affected

I'd recommend people to join snap.

Telecom are reverting back to their arrogant ways.
