plambrechtsen: Probably worth logging a fault with Apple as it is their device that is inadvertently using the data. I know I don't have the problem with my Samsung S4 when I switch off all data.

This. I've heard of this a few times before. Give the 123 team a call, they should be very helpful if you've never suffered bill shock for data in the past. Also log something with Apple or return to place of purchase.

onetapu: IWe didn't buy the phones - we were given them by our kids who upgraded!

This could be a factor
Were the phones COMPLETELY wiped/reset before they were given to you ?
They could of had all sorts of programs installed on them, using up data.

dude, he says he "TURNED OFF" cellular data on his iphone.

to the OP, don't blame telecom for the "RORT", it is an iphone 5 problem. if you can't make the phone not use data, don't blame telecom, blame your KIDS!
