Also that router is not awful, its designed for a home user, if you need advanced features go out and buy another router.

Is applying simple firmware updates to fix security issues not important?

Is the ability to easily change DNS servers not important?

Is the ability to get a reasonable manual for a bit of kit not a basic requirement?

I'd feel differently if Telecom said "There's a pre-configured router available. If you want to buy it, the cost is $150. If you don't want it and will get your own, we'll give you $150 off your first year to go buy your own router, but besides a downloadable PDF with the modem details and instructions for our network, we don't support this option".

But they don't.
