lyonrouge: I don't think I've been hacked but I went to change the password anyway but the site it not accepted current passwords either, wouldn't it be nice if we could have email portability like number port?

It's called domain based email, and buying your own domain name. With free email accounts you never own the email address, so you are stuck using that provider, and if they close down or have major problems, you will lose it.

My parents received one of these on a their Xtra email address from a relative who also has an Xtra / Yahoo account. I also received an email on my Gmail from Yahoo saying someone had attempted to access my Yahoo NZ account that I stopped using in around 2008. It didn't say they had successfully logged in but I changed the password anyway - this was an old Yahoo NZ account and isn't attached to a Telecom account so it's not just the Xtra ones spammers are trying to access again. Pretty sure this should indicate to Telecom that Yahoo is just plain not good enough and that it's time to move to something else.

It's called domain based email, and buying your own domain name. With free email accounts you never own the email address, so you are stuck using that provider, and if they close down or have major problems, you will lose it.

I just need to go back in time 20 years and implement that ;-)

Start moving over now and you should have it all sorted in a few months.

Really, if they dont email that often they probably are not worth hearing from.

Just set up a forwarder from your Xtra account to your own domain address and the problem is solved! ;-)

What I'd love to know is who was the bright spark that made the decision to go with Yahoo - the same person who thought that all the 'hip young things' would like Bebo phone? honestly, do they really need to have a 'anyone over 40 needs to resign' purge at Telecom? How on God's green earth did it make any sense to go with Yahoo when Google or Microsoft have a better reputation? why didn't they do something about cancelling the arrangement after the first fiasco? how many times must Yahoo keep failing and the executive who made the decision keep holding onto his job before the board finally realises this fiasco is taking a toll on the Telecom brand?

Yep, Just logged in and opened up the Support inbox at work this morning to see it filled with spam messages from Email accounts belonging to our customers who use Xtra Mail.

Interestingly, my yahoo.co.nz address gets a LOT of spam, whereas my yahoo.com address gets none whatsoever.

Register a domain, setup on outlook.com or google apps or office365 or other provider.

Most platforms have a mail fetching feature that will pull email from your old accounts into your new account/address.

Use your new address as your primary, tell everyone to update their contact for you.. slowly ween yourself off ISP provided email.

Still sending spam so disablement hasn't worked.

We are telling our clients and replying with:

Xtra has been hacked. Their users' web-mail service has been compromised and is being used to send out spam. It is not an individual infection of a user's machine but an exploit of Xtra's servers.

Your account (along with many other Xtra users accounts) has been hacked and is sending us spam. To fix it you need to log into your webmail and change your password. You also need to check your vacation auto response settings and auto forwarders to check they havent been tampered with.

Alternatively you can change your password here : http://selfservice.xtra.co.nz/live/selfservice/ChgPwd/

You can also contact Xtra on 0800 225598 to get help/
