FYI, No4. I'm seeing very similar performance at my month-old VDSL install. I've tested with a laptop plugged directly into the modem as a router. The reason I was interested was that I couldn't understand (not being a DSL expert) how I was getting upload speeds at the top of the expected range - circa 10Mbps - and download at the bottom - 15Mbps. Having spoken with Telecom, I was assured nothing was wrong.

No4: I have not tested the TG589 as a router, only in bridge mode. The previous modem was a Draytek V120 in bridge mode and I had the router set up with everything wired too it so put the vdsl modem straight into bridge mode also (She Who Must Be Obeyed was already antsy at the downtime over the switchover as it was). I've read on GZ about others who have used the TG589 in bridge mode without any apparent speed limiting side effect so I would expect that to be the root cause.

PM me your phone number and relevant details and I'll look into it

I'm on Telecom VDSL and get only around 7mbps down speed. Have been getting 34mbps up until last week. Goes up to 24mbps when someone is using the phone. Bad modem?

I suggest you start a new thread, as this doesn't seem to be that same problem as the OP

Thanks for the responses, it has helped me narrow down the problem to the Router. I repeated my test of a week ago by connecting a laptop directly to the modem. I had to log into xtra directly as the modem is still in bridge mode. Interestingly I could only do this through the lan port that connects to the router - I couldn't connect through any of the other 3 ports. Anyway, this time when I carried out a speedtest I got 35 down and 9.8 up. Now that's more like it.

I switched my main pc's connection from the gigabit switch directly to the router and it immediately dropped back to 13.7 down, so I have now isolated the problem at the router. Glad I asked here before hassling xtra support.

Now I just have to fix the router, however to make life more interesting Gargoyle has suddenly decided to stop accepting my password (which I haven't changed) so I've now got to get my head around fail-safe resets. Still, I can always switch to using the TG589 as a router in the interim if it gives me too much grief.

I've just tested copying a file from my NAS drive to my pc (both connected to the router rather than the switch) which proves that it is locked at 10MBit there also.

The joys of technology.

That's because bridge mode bridges the WAN port to LAN1 only.

Yep, so one or more ports are limited to 10MB/s, most likely full duplex.

Check the port speed settings and QoS settings on your router. It may be labelled as a power saving mode on some routers.

For anyone tripping across this thread, I've carried out a failsafe reset of my WR1043ND router running Gargoyle and set it to firstboot. After some farting around getting it configured again I'm all go and now getting full VDSL speeds through from the telecom modem (in this instance 9ms, 35.4 down. 9.3 up)

So all told I'm pretty happy with the change at present and consider this thread closed. My thanks to all those who stepped up with useful suggestions that helped me track down the problem.
