freitasm: Same answer as the Vodafone folks.

In my view this is one project I can't understand being "politically and commercially sensitive question".

Long term project? Yes? full of pitfalls? Yes. But it's not like a new super service that will sway customers from one operator to another. It's just one of those things that need to be done at some point, like changing a firewall. Customers won't know it's being done, but divulging it won't do any damage.

Apart from letting the competition know our plans and timelines. ;)

There are ongoing conversations about it. It would help if there was the killer application that meant everyone wanted needed that only worked on v6 that forced the hand rather than a request from the geek circles. But if you have a fair amount of address space up your sleeve then the impotence isn't there as much.

That's interesting as some companies which do business with the Government HAVE to be v6 compliant to win certain contracts. I know as I have a customer on my back about it :)

I'm obviously not talking retail ISP space here....

The simply answer is if you want IPv6 [including on VDSL] take your business to someone who can do it and there are a few of those who can provide it

Those that don't provide IPv6 will soon get the msg that they are loosing customers or not getting new business

There are good reasons to use IPv6 - NAT is insecure, NAT has performance issues. IPv6 is a better protocol

Eventually there will be IPv6 only devices due to the growth of the Internet and in particular mobile devices. There simply isn't enough addressing

Govt has good reason to insist on IPv6

why dont they just pass a law that says ISP's have to provide IPv6 by 2020? cant be too hard.

Because legislation of that type would be insane and unprecedented. Regulatory intervention in retail ISP service capability when competition is healthy would be a waste of money and would increase pricing for everyone.

Just because the government can regulate doesn't mean they should. It should be the last resort where market forces are for some reason unable to prevail.
